Paul Polak, Windhorse International: Disrupting Global Poverty With ...

Lots of rich men try to help the world's poor, but Paul Polak brings more than money to the table.

The 78-year-old innovator fled his home at age 5 when Nazi troops invaded his small home town in Czechoslovakia. "My dad saw what was coming and said, 'if we don't get out of here, we're going to die,'" Polak said. "He tried to get everyone else to leave as well, but they said, 'what would we do with our furniture?'"

The family escaped to Canada with virtually nothing. "I lived in a house with no electricity and carried water from across the street in buckets. But I didn't feel poor," Polak said. "Some people who are broke are in despair, and some people who are broke know it's temporary."

And it was. Polak became a successful psychiatrist and, through side businesses in real estate and oil, reached a net worth of $3 million before turning to a third act. About 30 years ago, he founded International Development Enterprises (IDE), a non-profit venture that provides poor farmers access to affordable irrigation tools. Then in 2008, Polak created the for-profit Windhorse International and design incubator D-Rev, which design and sell innovations to the world's poorest 90 percent.

To date, these companies and their subsidiaries have created products that cost substantially less than their predecessors and counterparts, including an $8 treadle pump (compared to a $500 diesel pump), $25 artificial knee and $400 hospital lamp for treating neo-natal jaundice, saving lives of babies in impoverished areas that previously couldn't afford the comparable $4,000 Western devices. Next on the agenda are methods for selling safe drinking water, converting agricultural waste to green coal and delivering affordable photovoltaic energy.

Polak says his techniques and products can eventually lift up to 500 million people living on $2 a day out of poverty. But applying a for-profit business model to global poverty make him "a pariah" in the field, Polak said. "The mainstream thinking was that businesses ripped people off and put them into poverty, so to propose doing business as a way of ending poverty was very unpopular."

HuffPost Small Business reached Polak by phone to talk about his background, his approach to poverty and his business methods.

Do you see any connections between the mindset of people in your childhood town and those in your field today?

People now are just as blind as the people then who didn't want to leave their furniture. People who believe in the charity approach to ending poverty are not about to change their approach in the face of abundant evidence that it doesn't work.

And your solution is to view poor people as customers?

The key is understanding customers in a deep way. I've talked to farmers in Bangladesh for hours, at their barns, walking through their fields. When poverty experts discuss the root causes of poverty, they [cite] lack of education, roads, access to capital or absence of power, but these people said they were poor because they didn't have enough money. And when I asked them how they could make more money, they said from their farming. If they could grow crops in dry seasons, they'd make three times as much money. And it seemed to work the best when poor people could pay full price for irrigation tools. That put the onus on us to design things poor people could buy and use to make a profit.

What advantages does a for-profit business model allow that charity doesn't?

Nonprofit organizations were making treadle pumps available to farmers and subsidizing the drilling costs, but then they could only put in the amount of pumps their budget would allow. Instead, we trained local businesses to produce treadle pumps, village dealers to sell treadle pumps and well drillers to install treadle pumps. We eventually recruited about 70 manufacturers, 2,000 to 3,000 dealers and 3,000 well drillers, all of whom earned a living. We sold about 1.5 million treadle pumps in Bangladesh.

I've interviewed more than 3,000 $1 day people, and now they're out of debt, can keep their kids in school and buy animals, whereas before their family didn't have enough to eat maybe three months of the year.

Coming from poverty yourself, what made you focus on others' condition vs. your own comfort?

I risked some of my retirement money and am taking more risks than anybody 78 should be taking to start these global businesses. Being wealthy isn't my primary goal.

Proposal Would Shift Costs for Federal Charity Drive to Nonprofits ...

A panel commissioned to propose reforms to the Combined Federal Campaign has recommended shifting administrative costs for the U.S. government?s workplace charity drive from donors to the recipient nonprofit groups, The Washington Post and Federal Times report.

Among 24 recommendations, the panel, headed by Tom Davis, a former congressman from Virginia, and Beverly Byron, a former congresswoman from Maryland, calls for charities to take on ?the burden of CFC costs? through a flat application or participation fee. Operational expenses are currently borne by federal workers through deductions from their donations.

The group, empaneled last year to mark the campaign?s 50th anniversary, also suggested expanding the CFC?s donor base to include federal and military retirees extending the drive by a month. Collections have dropped from a record $282.6-million in 2009 to $272.7 million last year, and participation has declined to fewer than a quarter of federal employees.

86% Your Sister's Sister

All Critics (106) | Top Critics (29) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (15)

It certainly shows that fine films don't need big budgets, capturing some sweet lightning in an arresting bottle indeed.

Romantic, funny, surprising and thoroughly involving, Your Sister's Sister is the rare film you give yourself over to completely.

There's a nice, loose-limbed improvisatory feeling to "Your Sister's Sister," a quality that identifies it as the work of artisans, not assembly-line professionals.

"Your Sister's Sister" follows the indie-cinema blueprint to the letter with one exception: One of the film's characters is a lesbian.

By the end of this graceful little emotional farce, you know these people, their hopes and their panic, and you wish them the very best.

Shelton and her cast are so skillful that before long it seems we are not moviegoers watching a screen but flies on a wall witnessing real encounters and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

One of the pleasanter surprises I've had this year.

Your Sister's Sister is a very sweet, very human feature that is also very, very funny. Much hay is made out of Mark Duplass' reaction shots, and that's just fine by me.

Behavior -- a mixture of scripted action and improvisation -- springs from a natural place, and while that can be uncomfortable as well as funny, it never rings false.

Such are the pleasures of improv when the players are as sharp and canny as they are here.

Lynn Shelton's fourth feature after her well-received "Humpday" demands more patience than understanding.

It's an oddly charming and entertaining film that works because it's willing to embrace the less savory side of its characters.

Although she would probably have liked a little more plot and polish, Nora Ephron would, I think, have approved.

Like a cool breeze, there is a light and fluffy feel to Your Sister's Sister that makes it the perfect palate cleanser in the middle of a hot, sweaty summer of explosions and superheroes.

There is so much good in the first hour that you can just about forgive its poorly written third act.

Involving and unexpected indie stands out from the crowd

There's a special satisfaction in hearing characters speak as if they just had arrived on the screen from the coffee shop adjacent to the movie theater.

This twisted tale has hidden agendas, pillow talk, latent romantic feelings, verbal fireworks and an ambiguous ending. As an avid bicyclist, the movie earns points from me in having Jack always wearing a helmet while riding. It loses its goodwill when...

Duplass is wonderful but even he can't shine as brightly as Emily Blunt.

This is exactly the kind of drama you thought that Hollywood couldn't make any more. The type of little lamb that would often be sacrificed in order to give us another bloated action mash-up like Transformers or Clash of the Titans.

Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt team up for good indie fun.

The film's conceits may be a bit too contrived and conventional, but nothing about these characters' interactions are forced. Your Sister's Sister is a welcome guest.

Good performances and a handy screenplay help things along, but these people find themselves more fascinating than I did.

Blunt and Duplass show enough star quality to ensure they will have plenty of work for many years to come.

A week after storm killed 77, Beijing victims ... - World News Tomorrow

July 28, 2012

? The Editor World News Tomorrow ? world_news_tomorrow-wnt-news-today-cnn--reut-world-news-

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW BEIJING ? A small group of people laid down white chrysanthemums and lit candles Saturday in Beijing to honor those who died in the storm that ravaged Beijing one week ago, killing at least 77.

The tribute took place under a railway bridge in central Beijing where a motorist drowned. Mourners also placed a plaque with the names of identified victims. The police peacefully dispersed the crowd after about 20 minutes, after it swelled with dozens of media members and blocked a lane on a major road.

A 27-year-old man held up a sign calling for transparency and accountability from the government. He declined to give his name.?Yes, I am afraid,? the man said, when asked if he feared retribution for his public act. ?But someone has to do it. I must have the conscience to act, and government officials should have a conscience.?

Local resident Chen Qilin said he was there to remember the dead. He says the deaths ?are related to the lack of action by the government.?The gathering was in response to an online call, and Guangqumen ? the suggested location for the memorial ? was a banned search term on the popular Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo.

Days after the storm, the city government updated the death toll to 77 from 37. Residents have questioned the delay, the quality of infrastructure in the fast-growing capital, and the government?s handling of the floods and rescue work.

BT London Live ? Hyde Park | babydaytripper.co.uk

It was the first proper day of the Olympics in London today, so we decided to get a free taste of the action.? After watching the men?s cyclists set off from The Mall in the road race, we headed to Hyde Park, where BT is hosting the free London Live festival every day during the Olympic Games.

The BT London Live event in Hyde Park is one of five official big screen sites set up across London for members of the public to watch the Games for free.? We had a great day, soaking up the atmosphere and taking in the family-friendly attractions on offer.? Here?s our round up of what there is to see and do, and some practical info.

BT London Live Big Screen

Attractions

Big screens

The main attractions are the five large screens dotted around the festival area.? Each screen shows footage of a different event, changing throughout the day, so you can follow your favourite athletes or cheer on your team?s best medal hopes.

Live music?

Away from the main screen/stage area, there is a small live music stage where performers entertain the crowds all day long (my son had a good boogie along to a couple of bands).? Pull up a giant beanbag, or find a spot on a bench, and enjoy the relaxed ambience.

Have a go sports

Try your hand at a range of sports from volleyball, tennis and badminton to wheelchair basketball.

Get creative

Take your children to the Creation Station tent to create their own Olympic flag, paint their own Olympic pose (overalls provided!) and make a glittering medal to take home.

Cadbury?s Joyville

Go along to the Cadbury?s tent to taste some chocolate, have a go at the mini Olympics and win a (chocolate) gold medal.

Olympic mascot

Practical information ?

Admission

Admission to the Hyde Park event is free until the site reaches capacity.? As far as we could find out, the site isn?t likely to reach capacity before the afternoon.? Once you are in, there is no re-admission.? Opening hours at Hyde Park are here.? Entry to the live site area is via gates at Speakers? Corner.

Food and drink

Visitors are not permitted to bring food and drink into the festival area.? You can take baby food, though, and empty 500ml plastic bottles to fill up with drinking water once inside.

There are lots of food and drink stalls on site.? Alongside the stalls belonging to the Olympic sponsors (think chocolate and fizzy drinks), there are the usual vendors you expect to see at music festivals, together with several bars (everything from real ale to champagne) and a coffee stall.

There is a picnic area near Screen 5, with lots of seating and some shady areas.? The baby changing tent is close to this area.

Essentials

The wet weather earlier in the summer turned the grass in this part of Hyde Park into a mudbath, a problem remedied by covering the whole area in woodchips.? As a result, the park is dusty and there isn?t anywhere for babies to crawl around.? It?s a good idea to take a waterproof-backed picnic blanket to put down (or a plastic sheet and a blanket) so you can sit and watch the big screen.? Other essential items are sun cream (must be less than 200ml) and a hat, as there?s not a lot of shade ? particularly if you are watching one of the big screens. ?For details of what you are allowed to bring click here.

Plastic Surgery in Costa Rica - Free Article Directory

Health and Fitness | Weight Loss | * Written by Dr.Oscar Su?rez | Friday, 27 July 2012 02:06 | Word Count: 499

Have you ever felt that your body is not the way you want it to be? Has there been any part of it that you would like to change? The good news is that nowadays most changes are possible when it comes to the human body! The only thing is, however, that you must be careful where you go to do these changes. Plastic surgery can be very dangerous if you are in the wrong hands. For that, I recommend Costa Rica plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery in Costa Rica is very safe, and even though you get great quality procedures, you pay a lot less, and the plastic surgeons are very professional! But still, you must be careful about choosing the right place. Keep reading if you want some tips on how to choose the right place to get plastic surgery!

One important thing you should do is to investigate. The web is a great place for that. If you find a clinic where you think you could get you cosmetic surgery done, Google it! Find out about the quality of their work, how much experience they have, and if possible, what others think about them. All that will help you to come to a conclusion whether the clinic is good enough or not. Plastic surgery in Costa Rica usually is of good quality, but it?s always good to make sure. Cosmetic surgery is very important, so you must take all this information into consideration.

Another aspect that you should take into account is the salubrity of the clinic. This is very important because if the place is not clean enough, you could get an infection. Therefore, when you are trying to decide, walk into the clinic and look around. Analyze whether there are alcohol dispensers (which most clinics and hospitals have in Costa Rica). Do the doctors use rubber gloves? Are the janitors cleaning up? Do the doctors sterilize the tools? Those are the questions that must be answered.

Last, but not least, socialize with the plastic surgeon that will perform the cosmetic surgery. Get to know his/her attitude. Most people in Costa Rica are friendly, but there are exceptions, and you must make sure that this person is not one of them. If you are wondering why, the reason is that this person is going to have your life and health in his/her hands, so it is a good idea to know that s/he will care enough.

To conclude, cosmetic surgery is possible, but you must think about where to do it. Plastic surgery in Costa Rica is a great option. Costa Rica plastic surgeons are great, and you pay less. However, you must make sure that the clinic where the procedure will be done has been well investigated (by you), that it is clean, and that the plastic surgeon is friendly enough. Follow these three tips and you will see that the clinic you choose will be the best option of all, so choose well, and enjoy the changes!

Refugees flee ethnic violence in India's troubled Assam

BIJNI, India (Reuters) - Trucks loaded with women, children, mattresses and bags of rice rolled into a refugee camp in India's northeastern Assam state on Thursday as security forces tried to stamp out some of the worst communal violence in a decade with shoot-on-sight orders.

The death toll from clashes between Bodo tribespeople and Muslim settlers has risen to 44, Assam's chief minister, Tarun Gogoi, said after police reported finding more bodies overnight. Police also opened fire on groups armed with sticks and spears for violating a curfew.

Fearing for their lives, tens of thousands of Muslims and Bodos have fled their homes in remote hamlets along the border with Bhutan, and sought shelter in camps in larger towns. Roving armed bands have set ablaze hundreds of tin-roofed homes, many made of hay and clay, in the nearly week-long orgy of violence.

Gogoi said 200,000 people had been displaced by the fighting. The relief camp in a school in the town of Bijni is just one of nearly 60 hastily set up to cope with the flood of refugees, officials said.

Many of the camps lack food, water and security. Angry refugees surrounded a group of state lawmakers visiting the Bijni camp on Thursday and demanded they take action.

"Go back, go back," they chanted. The lawmakers, clearly rattled by the encounter, cancelled plans to visit another camp and returned to the state capital with a security escort.

"There is no security at all," complained Habibur Rahman, 45, who fled to Bijni school camp earlier this week along with his parents, sister, wife and daughter.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who represents Assam in parliament's upper house, may fly to the area on Saturday, his office said.

Ringed by China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan, India's northeast is home to more than 200 ethnic and tribal groups and has been racked by separatist revolts since India's independence from Britain in 1947.

NIGHT-TIME ATTACKS

In recent years, Hindu and Christian tribes have vented strong anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment against settlers from mostly Muslim Bangladesh, which neighbors Assam.

The Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA), a government-funded think tank in New Delhi, said the government's failure to develop a coherent policy to deal with the ethnically volatile region meant Assam would remain vulnerable to ethnic clashes and communal tensions in the near future.

The latest violence erupted days after floods killed more than 100 people and left at least 400,000 homeless in Assam.

Bodos have felt marginalized in their homeland by waves of immigration since the 1950s, accusing the central government of allowing the flow of immigrants to win votes from the settlers.

The IDSA said in its commentary the migration of large numbers of Muslim migrants had created "enormous pressures on agriculture land, one of the vital means of livelihood for the indigenous communities".

In 1983, at least 2,000 people, mainly Bangladeshi immigrants, were killed in clashes in central Assam, and in 2008 more than 50 people died in fighting between Bodos and Muslim settlers.

The violence of the past week has been concentrated in the Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, situated in a narrow strip of land sandwiched between Bhutan and Bangladesh. Both districts were reported to be quiet overnight after army reinforcements were dispatched to help police and paramilitary forces.

But in recent days the pattern has been for attacks to be carried out under the cover of darkness.

Railway officials said train services between Assam and the rest of India resumed, escorted by "pilot" engines carrying armed guards, after attacks forced a halt earlier this week.

Cosmology and Philosophy at La Pietra | Cosmic Variance ...

I?ve traded off my reasons for not blogging much of late. Last week and before it was The Particle at the End of the Universe (in stores November 13!), but that?s now been handed in and I can kick back and catch up on my martini-drinking. Except that instead of doing that, I instantly hopped on a plane for Europe, where I?m now participating in a workshop on philosophy and cosmology. Not that you should feel sorry for me ? the workshop is being held at the La Pietra conference center, a beautiful facility owned by NYU in Florence. I?m not sure why NYU owns a conference center in Florence; it could have been a targeted purchase, but it could easily have just been a gift. (Caltech for a while owned an abandoned gold mine. Universities get all sorts of crazy gifts.) But at least temporarily, martinis have been put aside for Chianti and limoncello.

And work, of course. This is my favorite kind of workshop: less than twenty people, gathered around a table, with no fixed agenda, talking about issues of mutual interest as they come up. This group has both scientists and philosophers, although probably more of the latter. So far each day has featured a scientist ? Joel Primack, me, Brian Greene, Scott Aaronson ? giving some very general remarks, while everyone else takes turns whacking them with (metaphorical) sticks. My own talk started at 11 a.m. and didn?t finish until 5:30 p.m., with breaks for lunch and coffee. So it?s exhausting both intellectually and physically, but very rewarding to have the chance to dig very deeply into difficult issues.

My talk was about ? you guessed it ? the arrow of time. Most people in the room are already familiar with the basic story that time?s arrow is (at least mostly) a consequence of the increase of entropy over time, and that our current universe has low entropy, but the entropy was even much lower in the past, and that last fact demands cosmological explanation. The central question concerned what would count as an ?explanation.?

One idea might be that whenever you have a simple true statement that has enormously powerful consequence for many different facts about the universe, that statement would qualify as a ?law of nature.? Often we think of such laws as patterns that apply individually to each subset of the universe, but one could argue that the statement ?the early universe was in a low-entropy state of the kind that would naturally evolve into the universe we see? should also count as a law. If you buy into that, then one shouldn?t necessarily look for a deeper explanation of that fact; maybe that?s just how the universe is.

I think that?s an allowed position, but certainly not the most attractive from the point of view of most cosmologists. We tend to look at the low entropy of the early universe as a clue in our search for a better theory than the one we currently have.

From that perspective, what would count as having explained the low-entropy state? My argument was the following: imagine you have a certain theory of everything, consisting of a space of states (Hilbert space or whatever) and a dynamical evolution law. And imagine that, for almost all solutions to the equations of motion, some certain fact X about the system turn out to be associated with another fact Y almost all the time. (Fact X = our entropy is low, fact Y = it was even lower in the past.) Then, if we do indeed observe that fact X and fact Y are both true, then fact Y is ?explained? by this theory. You might still want to explain fact X, but that?s a harder question that I didn?t get into. It?s enough of a challenge to explain the lower-entropy past even if you accept as given the current low-entropy state. (And of course we?re imagining that we have well-defined theories with this feature, which at the moment we really don?t, although there are some rough ideas.)

I won?t claim that I convinced anyone who didn?t already agree, but I do think that there is more mutual understanding now than when we began. And the Chianti has been quite good.

Razer Ouroboros gaming mouse gets official: fits both hands, changes shape

Razer Ouroboros gaming mouse goes official fits both hands, changes shape

Launching alongside new iterations of its BlackWidow keyboard, Razer's latest gaming mouse just went official. We spotted the ambidextrous Razer Ouroboros just a few months ago, courtesy of some federal filings, and now we have the official line on its specs and layout. The symmetrical body means it'll even suit southpaws, while an adjustable palm rest and two interchangeable sides can contort the mouse into claw, palm or hybrid grip styles. If cables frustrate, the good news is that the Razer Ouroboros works in wireless mode too, while the 8,200 DPI sensor and a built-in clutch trigger button should keep you on the edge of accuracy. Razer reckon its new dual sensor system can detect surfaces ten times faster than its last generation sensors. The mouse is priced at $140, but you'll have to hold out until Q4 before it arrives in stores.

Meanwhile, Razer's gaming keyboards have appeared in several new guises -- though they may not wow like the Ouroboros. The BlackWidow 2013 adds improved anti-ghosting feature will allow up to 10 simultaneous key presses, with an anti-fingerprint finish coating the whole thing. An Ultimate version adds backlit keys, while the Tournament edition is ten key-less, dropping the number pad to ensure a tinier footprint for gamers on the move. Prices start at $80 for the Tournament version, up to $140 for the Ultimate, with the whole familia BlackWidow set to launch next month.

Fatahillah Square - The Old City Hall Square In Old Town Jakarta

In 1707 during the Dutch Occupation of Jakarta, the Old Batavia City Hall was constructed and served as the administrative centre, first for the Dutch East India Company or VOC and later for the Dutch Government. The front yard of this hall is what is today known as the Fatahillah Square.
Covering an area of 1.5 hectares, the square is paved with concrete tiles. Recent renovations in 2008 saw the addition of old style lamp posts and concrete balls in differing sizes laid along the paving.

Centering the square is a fountain which is thought to have been a water supply source during the Dutch and Portuguese rule. A cannon dating back to the Portuguese period also occupies a place in the square. An ornamental hand gesture on the cannon is thought to be a fertility sign for females by the locals.

During the past, the square, being part of the city hall was also used as a venue for executions. In fact the front rooms in the city hall building which now house the Jakarta National Museum for the most part, leads off into underground rooms dungeons.

The Fatahillah Square was acknowledged as a Cultural Heritage Site and declared open as such in 1970. This marked the beginning of the development of this area of the Old Town of Jakarta. Together with this inauguration was that of the National Museum as well which houses many historical and locally important, culturally diverse artifacts and exhibits.

As a large, open and public area found in the Indonesian capital, which is a rarity, the evenings see Fatahillah Square crowded with pedestrians, cyclists, food vendors, families and plenty of other individuals.

For those visiting Jakarta and wishing for a taste of the Old Jakarta and Batavia then Fatahillah Square is for you. If visiting the city for a longer period then serviced accommodation Jakarta may be the best option for travellers. Of the serviced apartments Jakarta, a well situated, luxurious and comfortable option will be the Somerset Grand Citra Jakarta. These apartments offer the comfort and facilities of a hotel stay coupled with the convenience of a home stay making for an ideal accommodation choice.

Writing Effective Cover Letters | Minnesota Works Blog

Your cover letter, along with your business card and resume, is an important tool of the job-hunting trade.

Written in business style, cover letters should contain an expression of your interest in working for a company, an abbreviated introduction to your career and a short, compelling paragraph detailing why you would be a perfect fit for a current or future opening.???

Each letter must be targeted for each position you seek or contact you make. Deciding what to put in the letter remains tricky since you do not want to repeat your entire resume, yet you will want to make a strong case for a company to, in fact, look at your skills and experience to see if they fit any open positions.?

Cover letters are employed in a variety of circumstances, ranging from applying for advertised jobs to serving as a ?letter of introduction? to companies where you want to work, requesting networking leads or informational interviews. The targeted audience may be different, but the general approach remains the same: Put your best foot forward.

Cover letters serve different readers. Typically, cover letters are targeted at specific job openings in a company. These ?application? letters match your qualifications to a position?s advertised requirements.

Another variation, the ?prospecting? letter, is used to contact employers who haven?t advertised or published job openings. These letters call for describing your skills and matching them to the perceived needs of the employer based on your research.

The ?networking? letter, in contrast, first refers to the person who gave you the referral before asking for an informational interview or, in the case of an opening, consideration for the position. It?s fine to ask in a networking letter for recipients to share more contacts at other companies if they?re willing.

Whenever using any of these letters remember to include a section attachment ? your resume. Cover letters use standard business letter formats. Below your name and address ? or masthead ? will be the date, followed by an empty line, then the recipient?s name and title, street address, city, state and ZIP code.

Tips for writing cover letters:

  • Address a Person?
Always address the letter to a specific person by name and title. Even if responding to a job that states ?no phone calls? consider calling to politely ask the name of the hiring authority. You may not always be able to identify the name of a specific person. In this case, send the letter to the title of the recipient (Production Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, Office Manager, Human Resources or Search Committee). Avoid ?To Whom It May Concern.?
  • State Your Intent?
In general, state your interest in the job.?In the case of a letter of introduction, simply state you would like to work for the company. Use the first paragraph to express your energy, enthusiasm, skills, education and work experience
that could contribute to the company?s success.
  • Use the second and third paragraphs, or a list of bullet points, that exhibit briefly your talents, experience and achievements. These can be brief summaries of what you illuminate in greater detail in your attached resume.
  • The T Formation
Consider the ?T? letter format, which first names the specific requirements an employer has asked for in an ad and your corresponding qualifications. If you have collected a list of likely qualifications for the positions you seek, you can do the same thing.
  • The Final Paragraph
Mention you will make a follow-up call within a week, perhaps within a few days, to confirm the document has been received and to ask for an interview. Thank the person for taking the time to read your letter. And use the appropriate closing, such as ?Sincerely.?

One More Look
Proofread your letter to check content, grammar and spelling, and ask someone else to have a look, too. Sign the letter in blue or black ink.

Avoid appearing too familiar, overbearing, humorous or cute. Avoid starting too many sentences or bullet points with ?I?? if possible. Keep sentences short and to the point. The entire letter should be one page composed of three to five paragraphs. Remember, your resume will fill in details.

queenmoony - Extinguish the Fire, Part 1: Dying Embers and Ash

Extinguish the Fire

A/N: This is a Peter/Stiles story. Warnings include: slash, a big age difference, pedophilia, implied statuary rape, might feature slightly dubious consent, and features a messy, co-dependent, unhealthy romance between an adult and a child. Part 1 of 2 or 3 parts. First part is decidedly K or K+, other part (or parts) will be T (or T+, not explicitly M thought).

Part 1: Dying Embers and Ash

??????????? Stiles knew his Mom was dying. The doctors and his Dad tried to make it sound different, more hopeful. ?She?s sick.? ?She?s getting the best treatment available.? ?Her spirit is strong.? His mom was dying and Stiles knew it. She was going to die, get a first-class express ticket to Heaven, and Stiles was going to have to take care of his Dad.

??????????? Just because Stiles knew all of this, because he was preparing himself for the tragedy that is to come, does not make him any less eleven-years-old. So he had been shooed out of the room while the doctor talked to his Mom and Dad. He had two crinkled dollars in his hand, he was supposed to go and get a snack, and wait in the waiting room.

??????????? Instead, Stiles takes one look at the vending machine, and feels sick to his stomach. He stuffs the dollars his Dad had given him in his pocket.

??????????? A minute later he finds himself standing in front of the elevators. He pushed a button, not really knowing, or caring, if he was pushing up or down. If they wanted him to get lost, he might as well get lost.

??????????? He pushed some buttons randomly. He got out of the elevator after a couple of stops and walked around. It was easy enough to pass by the nurses, he had a little sticker that marked him as a guess. The fact that he was a guess to the oncology unit and not whatever unit this happen to be would be a bit difficult for the nurses to detect.

??????????? Some redheaded nurse sent him a nasty look but paid him no more attention than that.

??????????? When he hears a commotion, along with some nurse yelling ?Code Blue,? he slides into a dark, unoccupied hospital room that had the door wide open. Only the room was apparently occupied.

??????????? There was a man, sitting in a wheelchair, facing the window.

??????????? Stiles attempt to sneak right back out fails massively as he stumbles into the door, closing it with a ?bang, by banging his funny bone into it. After his hissed, ?Ow,? he looks towards the man and starts to fumble for an apology, ?Oh, sorry, I didn?t mean to interrupt your? meditation or anything.? ?

??????????? The man?s only response was to tilt his head a bit, as to angle his handsome profile to Stiles. The light that poured in through the window was soft and hazy around his face, leaving him in shadows, like a halo for a dark angel.

??????????? ?Hi,? Stiles says, awkwardly, scuffing the tip of his sneaker on the linoleum floor, ?I?m here to visit my Mom. She?s sick.? He can?t get himself to say ?she?s dying? out loud, because it might make it more real. Maybe, maybe if that idea just stays in his mind, it won?t become real, won?t manifest into this world. Maybe all the doctors and his Dad are right. Maybe she will get better. Maybe her strong soul will rage war against the cancer plaguing her body, maybe her soul will win.

??????????? But, then again, they talk about the strength of her spirit, of her soul. But the cancer isn?t soul cancer, it is lung cancer.

??????????? She never even smoked.

??????????? The man sitting in the chair gives him a bit of a nod.

??????????? ?Is it okay if I stay here a bit? Maybe some of your zen-like serenity will rub off on me.?

??????????? The man does not reply. The shadows cover his face, so Stiles cannot really make out any of his expression. After a minute, Stiles turns to leave, to give this man his privacy, before a soft, raspy voice says, ?Stay.?

??????????? Stiles does an about face and begins to walk towards him, but the voice, guttural almost, commands him to, ?No closer.?

??????????? ?Um, okay,? Stiles, not really known for keeping his foot out of his mouth asks, ?why?

??????????? The man seems to hesitate, ??I?ve? been burned.?

??????????? ?Oh,? Stiles says, and suddenly he feels sick, like when he was looking at the vending machine. This man, who from afar and in this light and at this angle looks handsome, has been burned to the point that he does not want somebody to be able to look at him. And then another realization hit him. The Hale house fire had one man who survived. Who had survived, but just barely, ?I?m so sorry?? Stiles does not muster up the courage to put his hypothesis into action, to call him Peter.

??????????? The man gives him a slight nod again.

??????????? Stiles stands, eyes darting around the room. The Hale fire was almost a year ago. This room does not look really lived in. Stiles?s Mom had been here for a few months, and the Stilinski family had made it feel as much like home as possible. There were pictures propped up on the side table, flowers in vases, some of Stiles?s late grandma?s quilts were hung over the backs of the hospital chairs.

??????????? This room, there was nothing to indicate that there was somebody who has been living here for a while. Stiles sadly thought that maybe this man, Peter Hale, had nobody to make the hospital feel as much like a home as possible. That all those people that cared for him had died as their home burned.

??????????? ?My names Stiles. Well, not really, but my real first name is horribly embarrassing. It is foreign sounding, but worse, it is a girl?s name. A Kurdish girl?s name! And, trust me; the name is just about as attractive as the word ?Kurdish.? So I go by a nickname. A nickname that comes from my last name, Stilinski and not from the word ?style.? Because Lydia does not think I?m very stylish.?

??????????? Stiles?s introduction is a bit ramble-ly, but still. The man snorts in amusement.

??????????? ?So,? Stiles says, ?do you want to talk to me??

??????????? ?No,? the man?s voice sounds a bit like Smegal, during his unhealthy transformation into Golem. Like he is quietly coughing out words.

??????????? ?Oh, well, I can, um-?

??????????? ?You can talk,? the man chokes out, realizing how just saying ?no? might sound a bit mean. The man reaches his hand towards his neck, which Stiles now sees is bandaged but not as bandaged as the other hand that seems to limply just lay on his lap, ?it hurts to-?

??????????? ?Oh!? Stiles voice squeaks and his eyes widen, ?I?m so sorry. But, like you said. I can talk. Can I talk. I can talk like no other talker has ever talked before? I get in trouble a lot at school because I talk too much. But Mom and Dad never get upset with me for talking too much. They listen to what I say. The only other person who listens to what I say is my best friend Scott. But he does not listen as well or often as my parents do. I have the best parents in the world. But my mom? well, I don?t really want to talk about that right now.?

??????????? And talk he did. He sits on the floor, leaning his back against the door, and then he opened his mouth and let the words flow. Stiles talked about his misadventures with his friend, Scott. He talks about some wonderful times he has had with his parents. About how much he likes to go to the zoo. How he likes playing in the woods, even though he not really supposed to. He talks about how much of a jerk Jackson Whitmore is. He talks about how much he loves the strawberry blonde haired, green-eyed girl named Lydia (who seems to not know he exists. But Stiles insists he just ?hasn?t made it on her radar yet.?). He talks about how in kindergarten, his teacher could not figure out how to pronounce his last name while taking role, and had made a few different attempts, ?Stiles? Stiles-sky, Stiles-ski, Stiles-lin-sky?? And he talked about how that one incident, on the first day of kindergarten, had earned him his nickname.

??????????? Stiles basically gives this man the story of his life, though he ended the story a few months ago so he wouldn?t have to tell the story that involves words like ?cancer? and ?Mom? and ?death.? After he had said all he could think to say, he realized his Mom and Dad were probably worried about him by now.

??????????? ?I need to go,? Stiles says, ?My Mom and Dad are probably worried about me. I was only supposed to be picking up some Reese?s cups from the vending machine. So I need to go,? Stiles does not know why he is stalling till the words fall from his mouth, ?But can? I- I mean, do you? Would it be okay if I came back to visit you??

??????????? ?Yes.?

??????????? Stiles heart swells, ?Good, I?m glad, I?ll come back and talk to you, sometimes. Okay??

??????????? The man nods.

??????????? Stiles clambers up, when his hand is on the doorknob, the man says, ?Stiles??

??????????? The way the man?s rough voice says his name makes Stiles?s heart flutter for some unknown reason, ?Yes??

??????????? ?Don?t tell my nurse anything. She thinks I?m comatose.?

??????????? ?Oh,? well, that?s kind of weird, ?was she a mean-faced redhead??

???????????

??????????? Stiles can sense the smirk on the man?s face as he nods.

??????????? ?My lips are zipped!? he opens the door, and before he can think through what he was doing, he was saying, ?See you soon, Peter.?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

??????????? As Deputy Stilinski and his son drive home from the hospital, Stiles happily chats about his ?new friend? Peter Hale. The Deputy had attempted to scold his son when he had returned, but when Stiles claimed he had spent his time talking with a burn victim who had lost his home and most of his family, Deputy Stilinski?s scolding fizzled into some hugging and forehead kissing.

??????????? Deputy Stilinsky is struck by how kind his son is, how good he is. He readily agrees to Stiles visiting the lonely man.

??????????? Every time Stiles and his Dad goes to visit his Mom, Stiles goes to visit Peter Hale for a little bit, while his Dad and Mom make out or something.

??????????? Stiles makes sure to be sneaky about it. Peter Hale says that his nurse gives him the ?creeps? and he does not want to talk to her, so his answer is pretend to be comatose. He says it allows him time to think.

??????????? When his Mom dies, his visits to Peter stop and his panic attacks start.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

??????????? Peter realizes after only two week that Stiles was not coming to visit and what that meant. Stiles?s mom had died. Peter heart broke for the beautiful boy. The beautiful boy came to visit him when his surviving nephew and niece had packed up and moved to other side of the country, leaving him behind.

??????????? But, he did not care for Stiles the way he cared for Laura and Derek. He cared for him in a way he dare not let himself think about.

He convinces himself when a month had passed that Stiles would not be returning. He could not blame the child. This place was a reminder of his mother?s sickness and her death. He tries to just find joy in the time that he got to spend with Stiles.

Only, a couple days after Peter resolutely comes to this conclusion, Stiles sneaks into his room. But Stiles is wearing a medical gown.

?Stiles?? Peter asks, confused.

?Hey Peter,? Stiles greets. Peter had attempted to keep Stiles from seeing him, but today Peter was in his bed. And Stiles, who previously had carefully stayed as far away as possible, did not seem to think as he tip-toed to the chair, placed by his bed, and suddenly Peter felt very uncomfortable. He turned his burnt side away from the boy, ashamed.

?Oh,? Stiles says, as he sees Peter up close for the first time, ?well, I?m sorry if me seeing you makes you uncomfortable? But if it makes you feel any better, even with the burns you are still one of the best looking people I?ve ever seen.?

Peter?s laugh is startled, and it is probably the least sore his voice Stiles had ever heard. His smile was soft, and his green eyes were warm, ?Thank you, Stiles. That is quite the consolation.?

?I know I haven?t been to see you in a while, but-?

?I understand, Stiles,? Peter says, voice warm, and Stiles is happy to hear his voice. His voice as it was before the lining of his throat had been shredded by smoke. His voice as it was before the fire, ?I?m sorry.?

Peter does not say ?for your loss? or ?for the death of your mother,? because he understands. Understands how being reminded of your loss hurts like hell.

?I?m sorry that I haven?t come to visit you,? Stiles retorts.

?I have missed you,? Peter says. Peter Hale had always been rather open with his feelings. Much to the dismay of his shy, ?no chick talk? nephew.

?I?ve missed you too,? Stiles murmurs.

?Why are you in,? Peter sent a glare at Stiles?s medical gown, ?that??

?Oh, I, um, sort of hadapanicattack.?

Peter squints at Stiles, ?What??

?I had a panic attack. I couldn?t breathe. Breathing is kind of important to, you know, living. So I?m here. Which, is kind of a good thing, ?cause I got to see you.?

?Peter looked at Stiles, critically analyzing him, ?Do I need to worry about you??

?No!? Stiles waves off, ?No need to worry. But, could I, could I hug you? I mean, it wouldn?t hurt you physically or disgust you emotionally or anything-?

?Stiles,? Peter interrupts, smoothly. Stiles is fascinated with how smooth his real voice is, how soft, how civil, ?of course you can hug me. Just, be easy on the burned side.?

Stiles pushes himself out of the chair, walks the few steps it takes to get to the bed, and then, he stops. He looks at the bed, looks at Peter?s unburned side, and eases himself into the space on the bed by Peter, and buries his head into Peter?s shoulder.

Peter takes in a sharp breath and closes his eyes tightly. Peter slides his arm around him, carefully, and draws the boy closer to his chest.

The Real Housewives of New York City: Blinded By the Wine

The Real Housewives of New York City are "Blinded By the Wine" and the gorgeous Miami skyline but is it enough of a distraction against the pervert who came to dinner?  We recap the strange photography and lewd dinner conversation in our THG +/- review.

Ramona can't wait to have lunch with Carole and Sonja. She's hoping to get all the dirt on Heather when something unexpected happens. The ladies only want to bitch about LuAnn.

Plus 7.  Ramona's more than happy to go along with that conversation, unexpected as it may be.  Little does she know what LuAnn has in store for her next.

As Ramona's saying how nice it is that she and LuAnn can at least be civil to one another in public, LuAnn's polite facade gives way to some mean spirited and oh so pretentious wine games.

Does Ramona Know Her Wine?

The set up is to blindfold Ramona in front of a crowd and ask her questions about her own wine in the hope that she'll embarrass herself.  Minus 12 to LuAnn and partner in wine snobbery Jaques. LuAnn needs to go back and read her own etiquette book. They may have found it funny but it's just plain mean to make fun of one of your guests…even Ramona.

What is it with the waxing of body hair on this show.  Last year we took a tour of Cindy's waxing boutiques and now LuAnn and Heather visit the Boom Boom Brow barMinus 8 because not only was it boring but LuAnn whined like a six year old.  Man up, woman.

Aviva invites everyone but Heather and LuAnn to her place in Miami.  Minus 5.  Of course she can invite whomever she wants but wasn't she the one giving Heather a hard time about excluding Ramona?

Before Sonja heads off to Miami she meets up with Heather and her marketing expert to work out Sonja's logo. Although Sonja came across pretty defensive to all of their suggestions, I'll agree with her on one point. The guy could have at least looked at her website before trying to design her brand.

Then it's off to Miami.  Plus 11 for that condo and the gorgeous view. That terrace was huge. I'm not sure I'd ever want to leave. It's so beautiful that Aviva even gets over her fear of heights.

Aviva tells Sonja not to worry about feeling like a third wheel. She's got a man to set her up with.  Plus 6 for thinking ahead but then there's always a catch.

The guy is Aviva's Dad. OK. That's a little weird and yet it gets worse.  Her father's a sex addict!

Sonja Contemplates Her Choices

Eww…but Sonja's fine with that. Well, she's fine with the sex addict part. It's the father part she questions. Of course Sonja likes older men. We'll have to wait and see how this goes.

Then we get to meet Aviva's father and he is all that and more. Aviva thinks her father is hilarious. Not quite the word I'd use. How many fathers talk vibrators with their in-laws over a family dinner?  Minus 10.  I won't even mention the giant hot dog he told his daughter to order at dinner. I really don't want an invite to Aviva's.

Aviva and Reid's condo is amazing, if a little odd. First off how do they keep the furniture that sparkling white with four children? Then there's the wall art.

Minus 12.  It must be kind of creepy to be lying in the guest room only to look up and see a giant portrait of Aviva and Reid getting handsy staring back at you.

But it looks as though this trip gets even more interesting next week when it appears that someone breaks the no nudity rule.
Will the gloves come off along with the clothing?  Stay tuned…

Sheep, a dog and GPS tracking reveal evolutionary rules behind sociality

Sheep may come across as simple, straightforward followers. But as those who work with the animals know, sheep can behave in surprising ways. For one, flocking may not show a friendly tendency?there might be selfish motivations as well.

In research published on July 24 in the print edition of Current Biology, scientists monitoring sheep have demonstrated empirical support for a behavioral theory first proposed almost 40 years ago. "We're getting to the nitty-gritty of the real evolutionary rules selected for in behavior," says behavioral ecologist Andrew King of the University of London Royal Veterinary College, a co-author on the study. King has studied sociality in birds, fish, baboons and even humans?and believes these rules of group behavior found in sheep could apply more broadly. "If we can understand how these rules work, we can hint at similar systems and common principles across species."

Selfish-herd theory, first proposed by the British evolutionary biologist W. D. Hamilton in 1973, posits that individuals dilute their risk of predation by moving into a larger group?a "Don't eat me, eat this other guy!" response. Although widely cited, the theory is difficult to test in the field given the unpredictable nature of predators and challenge of observing movements in a large group of animals.

The interactions between sheep and sheepdog, however, provide an ideal testing ground. "Working with sheep is great because you can measure their movements and even tell the dog when to begin," King says. "You have control of the whole system but it remains really natural as well."

King?with colleagues at the University of London and University of Cambridge?outfitted 46 sheep with GPS backpacks to enable second-by-second remote tracking. They then orchestrated a predator event by releasing an Australian Kelpie, a sheepdog that also wore a GPS module, on the flock. In each of three trials, the approaching dog drove the sheep in a fleecy flurry while scientists recorded how each individual in the group moved.

In each trial, the sheep ran rapidly toward the center, jostling for position within the group, as selfish-herd theory would predict. To further suss out the rules behind the sheep's movements, the biologists compared the observed behavior with various mathematically modeled scenarios. As they report in Current Biology, one of the patterns they noted relates to the kind of predator behavior that triggers a sheep's flight. Whereas one hypothesis suggests an individual will start running when a predator is within a given distance, the researchers found instead that sheep won't start moving until the dog has approached a relative midpoint of neighboring sheep. The finding suggests that sheep have some level of social-spatial awareness, possibly because they do not want their herd scattered.

This particular predator?prey model may have a few confounding elements, however, particularly because the sheepdog has no intention of eating the sheep and the latter may be familiar with the dog's approach. Nevertheless, the authors found the response of the sheep to be so consistent that they believe it makes for a reliable representation of predator?prey interaction.

"How individuals move relative to one another within groups to avoid predation has remained an intriguing yet vexing field of research," says behavioral ecologist M. Justin O'Riain at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. O'Riain, who has studied how seals move into more compact groups when a shark approaches, notes that the innovative use of GPS technology in the study by King and colleagues takes these questions to "a new and exciting level."
