Windows 8 will be hackers' choice next year

Windows 8 will be hackers' choice next year -

Insecurity outfit Websense claims that Windows 8 will become one of the top three most hacked platforms in 2013 alongside Google's Android and Apple's iOS.

This is somewhat surprising because for Windows 8 to be attacked on such a scale, it would have to be more popular that Windows 7 or Windows XP.

So far sales figures have not indicated that Windows 8 would be that much of a significant target during 2013 for hackers to be bothered about.?But Websense's beef appears to be with open systems. It claimed that Redmond's efforts to produce an extremely developer friendly platform will make it a soft target for the cybercriminal community.

The report said that if Microsoft delivers on its promise to be more developer friendly the rate of threat growth on Microsoft mobile devices will be the highest.

Websense's logic is that the more open the operating system is, then the more likely it is that it will be hit by hackers. According to the firm, Android will be targeted because of its open nature.

Google's efforts to reduce fragmentation and the platform's overall mobile market share will draw in even more cybercriminals than in previous years.

The report claims that Apple will be the most secure because it is closed. Which is a statement that will amuse anyone in the security industry. Apple is famous for being the first to fall in hacker competitions. Linux, which is the most open saucey, is the least attacked.

The company made seven predictions for 2013:?Mobile devices will be the new target for cross-platform threats, cybercriminals will use bypass methods to avoid traditional sandbox detection. legitimate mobile app stores will host more malware in 2013, government-sponsored attacks will increase as new players enter, hactivists will move to the next level as simplistic opportunities dwindle, malicious emails will make a comeback, and cybercriminals will follow the crowds to legitimate content management systems and web platforms.?

Drought threatens to close Mississippi to barges

The potential closure of the river due to low water levels has raised concern for barge companies and others who use the river for shipping with a prolonged shutdown of the river possibly costing billions of dollars in losses. They are normally not seen but now exposed along with their large sandbars by months of drought and low water levels the could close the river to barge traffic. ST. LOUIS (AP) ? After months of drought, companies that ship grain and other goods down the Mississippi River are being haunted by a potential nightmare: If water levels fall too low, the nation's main inland waterway could become impassable to barges just as the harvest heads to market.

Any closure of the river would upend the transport system that has carried American grain since before steamboats and Mark Twain. So shipping companies are scrambling to find alternative ways to move tons of corn, wheat and other crops to the Gulf Coast for shipment overseas.

"You can't just wait until it shuts down and suddenly say, 'There's a problem,'" said Rick Calhoun, head of marine operations for Chicago-based Cargill Inc. "We're always looking at Plan B."

The mighty Mississippi is approaching the point where it may become too shallow for barges that carry food, fuel and other commodities. If the river is closed for a lengthy period, experts say, economic losses could climb into the billions of dollars.

It isn't just the shipping and grain industries that will feel the pinch. Grocery prices and utility bills could rise. And deliveries of everything from road-clearing rock salt for winter and fertilizer for the spring planting season could be late and in short supply.

"The longer it lasts, the worse it gets," said Don Sweeney, associate director of the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "It's inevitable that it will mean higher prices down the road."

The focus of greatest concern is a 180-mile stretch of the river between the confluences of the Missouri River near St. Louis and the Ohio River at Cairo, Ill. That's where lack of rain has squeezed the channel from its normal width of 1,000 feet or more to just a few hundred feet.

The river depth is 15 to 20 feet less than normal, now about 13 feet deep in many places. If it dips to around 9 feet, rock pinnacles at two locations make it difficult, if not impossible, for barges to pass. Hydrologists for the National Weather Service predict the Mississippi will reach the 9-foot mark by Dec. 9.

The situation worsened last week when the Army Corps of Engineers began reducing the outflow from an upper Missouri River dam in South Dakota, where a group of experts said Thursday that the worst U.S. drought in decades had intensified over the last week.

The flow is gradually being cut by more than two-thirds by Dec. 11 as part of an effort to ease the effects of the drought in the northern Missouri River basin.

Lawmakers from Mississippi River states are frustrated with the corps' action and even requested a presidential emergency declaration to overturn it. So far, the White House has not responded.

On Thursday, Army Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy told Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and some of his colleagues from Iowa and Minnesota that the corps would consider cutting the amount of water held back from the Mississippi.

Darcy also pledged to expedite removal of rock formations south of St. Louis, though that work would take at least two months after a contractor is hired.

To Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, the stakes couldn't be higher.

"There is going to be a dramatic ripple effect to our economy if the barge traffic grinds to halt, which clearly it will if something is not done to avert this crisis," she said.

Her Missouri colleague in the Senate, Republican Roy Blunt, acknowledged "friction" between upper Missouri River interests that control the flow and those downstream on the lower Missouri and Mississippi rivers. He said the corps "needs to manage that balance."

Over the years, parts of the river have occasionally been closed because of low water, barge accidents, dredging, ice and flooding. But this shutdown, if it happens, would affect a pivotal stretch that is used for heavy two-way traffic ? shipments going south to the Gulf as well as transports from the Illinois and Ohio rivers headed north to Chicago and Minneapolis.

A two-month shutdown ? the length of time that some observers fear given current conditions ? would have an estimated impact of $7 billion, according to the river industry trade group American Waterways Operators.

Consider agricultural products. It costs 30 to 35 cents more per bushel to send grain to the Gulf by rail instead of barge ? a massive figure when calculating the millions of bushels shipped downriver.

"When you think of all we buy at the grocery store that has grain and corn, consumers could really see it hit them in the pocketbooks," said Ann McCulloch of the Waterways Operators group.

The Coast Guard controls navigation on the river and decides when to require restrictions or shut it down.

"It's really played by ear," Coast Guard Lt. Colin Fogarty said. "The Mississippi River is a dynamic environment."

River shippers are bracing for the worst, weighing train and truck alternatives to move a staggering volume of cargo, if necessary.

Seven million tons of farm products are shipped via barge in a typical December-January period, along with 3.8 million tons of coal, 1.7 million tons of chemical products, 1.3 million tons of petroleum products and 700,000 tons of crude oil, McCulloch said.

Trains already haul a vast volume of material, but switching from river to rail isn't that easy, especially on short notice. Cargill, for example, uses 1,300 of its own barges on inland waterways. Finding that much capacity elsewhere is no simple task.

"We'll look for other sources of transportation to the extent we can. But if you take away this important artery, you can't just snap your fingers and replace it with trains," Calhoun said. "There aren't just trains sitting around. They're already pretty busy with their business on their books."

Tractor-trailers can pick up some of the slack. But some cargo, such as coal, just isn't cost-effective to haul by truck over long distances, said Bob Costello, an economist with the American Trucking Associations.

Businesses operating directly on the river are bound to suffer, too.

George Foster founded JB Marine Service Inc. in St. Louis 36 years ago to make a living fixing and cleaning barges. An extended river closure may force layoffs, he said. He figures many other companies will be forced to cut jobs, too.

"It's extremely dire," Foster said. "There's no way to sugarcoat it."

Scientists identify depression and anxiety biomarker in youths

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered a cognitive biomarker -- a biological indicator of a disease -- for young adolescents who are at high risk of developing depression and anxiety. Their findings were published today, 28 November, in the journal PLOS ONE.

The test for the unique cognitive biomarker, which can be done on a computer, could be used as an inexpensive tool to screen adolescents for common emotional mental illnesses. As the cognitive biomarker may appear prior to the symptoms of depression and anxiety, early intervention (which has proven to be one of the most effective ways of combatting mental illness) could then be initiated.

For the study, 15-18 year old participants underwent genetic testing and environmental assessment, an exercise which would currently be too expensive and take too long to use as a widespread method of screening. The adolescents were then given a computer test to gauge how they process emotional information. The test had the participants evaluate whether words were positive, negative or neutral (examples included 'joyful' for positive, 'failure' for negative, and 'range' for neutral).

Those adolescents with a variation of one gene (the short form of the serotonin transporter) as well as exposure to intermittent family arguments for longer than six months and violence between parents before the age of six were shown to have marked difficulty in evaluating the emotion within the words, indicating an inability to process emotional information. Previous research associated a maladjusted perception and response to emotions, as seen here, with a significantly increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Professor Ian Goodyer, Principal Investigator on the study from the University of Cambridge, said: "Whether we succumb to anxiety and depression depends in part on our tendencies to think well or poorly of ourselves at troubled times. How it comes about that some people see the 'glass half full' and think positively whereas other see the 'glass half empty' and think negatively about themselves at times of stress is not known.

"The evidence is that both our genes and our early childhood experiences contribute to such personal thinking styles. Before there are any clinical symptoms of depression or anxiety, this test reveals a deficient ability to efficiently and effectively perceive emotion processes in some teenagers -- a biomarker for low resilience which may lead to mental illnesses."

The scientists hope that their research could lead to developing inexpensive cognitive tests to screen for these illnesses, particularly in people identified as being at high social and genetic risk.

Dr Matthew Owens from the University of Cambridge added: "Having difficulty in processing emotions is likely to contribute to misunderstanding other people's intentions and can make individuals emotionally vulnerable. This research opens up the possibility of identifying individuals at greatest risk and helping them with techniques to process emotions more easily or training them to respond more adaptively to negative feedback."

Professor Goodyer further stated: "These types of cognitive biomarker can also be used to aid therapeutics by helping to determine which treatments are likely to work best for types of depressions and anxiety disorders. This is important, as although we have good treatments we do not yet know what works best for whom."

Professor Barbara Sahakian, a co-author on the paper from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge said: "The way we perceive and respond to emotions affects our resilience and whether we succumb to depression and other maladaptive ways of thinking. Using the biomarker identified in this study, it is possible to develop a screening programme to identify those at greatest risk."

Mental health problems are common in young people with approximately 10% of children (aged 5-16 years old) in Great Britain being assessed as having a mental disorder of some kind including conduct disorder, emotional disorder or hyperactivity. In addition, adolescence is a critical period for the development of depressions.

Mega-risks that could drive us to extinction

The end is not nigh, but it could be unless we constrain our own technological ingenuity. That's the warning from an initiative in Cambridge, UK, that wants to create a centre to focus on huge, technological hazards that could wipe out the human race at a stroke.

These dangers would include robots that escape our control, nuclear war, doomsday plagues designed in laboratories, and devastation from climate change triggered by human activity.

"We're talking about threats to our very existence stemming from human activity," says Martin Rees, a professor of cosmology and astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. Along with Cambridge philosopher Huw Price and Jaan Tallinn, inventor of Skype, he has founded the Cambridge Project for Existential Risk.

Wrong focus

Rees says we focus too much on tiny risks that are widespread, such as trace contaminants in food, and too little on massive, one-off risks that could wipe us out. To counteract this, Rees, Price and Tallinn are proposing creating a Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at Cambridge.

"We don't think enough about low-probability, high-impact events, where one might be too many," says Rees. "The financial crash is a good example of something not predicted, and there will be other events of that type that have never happened before, but which we need to anticipate," he says. The centre would, hopefully, forestall our extinction by exploring how these mega-risks can be predicted and controlled.

AI threat

"We need to take seriously the possibility that there might be a 'Pandora's box' moment with artificial intelligence that, if missed, could be catastrophic," says Price. That critical point might come when computers can write their own programs, he says.

New concerns about "killer" robots also emerged last month in the US, where the non-governmental organisation Human Rights Watch released a report entitled Losing humanity: the case against killer robots.

"Giving machines the power to decide who lives and dies on the battlefield would take technology too far," says Steve Goose of Human Rights Watch.

When meeting a friend at La Compagnie de Bretagne, a chic (and huge) cr?perie in Saint-Germain-des-Pres,?all I wanted was a simple combo of galette and apple cider. Little did I know that on Sundays from 11am to 3pm, this place?only offers?an abundant???34 weekend brunch?consisting of a hot and a cold drink,?an appetizer buffet, a viennoiserie/dessert buffet, a made-to-order hot dish, and a made-to-order dessert cr?pe. A total overkill for me!

Appetizer buffet: cold cuts, smoked salmon, cauliflower salad, cheeses, scrambled eggs, sausages?

Oh, and oysters!

The viennoiserie/dessert buffet: croissants, pain au chocolat, danish, flan?not particularly enticing.

Choices of hot drinks include coffee, tea, and spiced hot chocolate chocolate, while cold drinks are a selection of packaged juices (no freshly squeezed, sad).

One of our choices for the main course was?galette du jour, which happened to be a galette of blue cheese, pear, and walnuts. Not bad, but the amount of ingredients seemed a little inadequate when compared to the plates at Breizh Cafe.

Our other choice of ?main course was?kig ha farz, a traditional Breton dish?consisting of meats (e.g. pork knuckles and beef) simmered in a?broth?with vegetables (e.g. carrots and cabbage) and a?buckwheat?flour based?pudding. Similar to?pot-au-feu, this is a lovely comfort dish for the winter.

Dessert crepe: caramel with salted butter. It?s as simple as it looks.

Bright space, friendly service, adequate food. Won?t come back for brunch again, but when in the mood for crepes and too lazy to travel to Le Marais for Breizh Cafe, I?d perhaps come for the a la carte menu. I heard they have a lobster crepe that is quite amazing?

The requirements for getting credit are pretty straight forward. If you are employed, having a monthly revenue of $800 or higher, and also have a bank account, you satisfy the fundamental requirements. A number of loan providers inside our network may have extra needs.

Cash financial loans tend to be unsecured financial products removed on the following wage. Three Big Changes Ahead for Higher Education | online learning ...

?The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.? ?Albert Einstein

A change of thinking is almost obligatory when considering the future of Higher Education. Last week was the final week of the MOOC Current/Future State of Higher Education (CHFE12); its overarching objective was to explore the influences and pressures facing universities today and to identify where higher education is headed. Numerous esteemed educators?[including author and Georgia Tech's? Richard Demillo and Vice Provost Joel Hartman of University of Central Florida] shared their knowledge, expertise, research, and in some cases predictions via webinars, to shed light on the conundrums within higher ed. The results are surprising, encouraging and telling of what educators need to do to adapt and be prepared.

In this post I?ll share my synopsis of the course by focusing on three areas of change. My aim is to share with readers the areas that will be most helpful and maybe even instructive in how-to adapt thinking and/or teaching. The three areas are: 1) the drivers of change in higher education, 2) change in pedagogical methods based upon progressive educators, and, 3) changes in educational models that are on the horizon for higher education. The latter point, is my prediction of where higher education is going based upon research and findings during this MOOC.? I?ve also included a list of resources at the end of this post, links to the recorded webinars and resources available from CHFE12.

    1. Drivers of Change in Higher Ed
Change is constant, yet the rate of change in higher education is accelerating. The theme of ?change? was pervasive throughout the course; each webinar guest spoke of ?change? in some context. Though it was during the weeks? topic of Leadership in Education that explored change in-depth. James Hilton, Chief information officer at the University of Virginia during the webinar he led, Thriving in Times of Disruption, described change as profound, and creating chaos and conflict. Yet at the same time, Hilton described change as an opportunity for institutions to find its North Star, meaning its strengths ?to energize the institution by focusing on those identified.

The first step in adapting and thriving in a period of chaos is to objectively and carefully examine the drivers of change that are affecting a given sector. In our case education, we can narrow it down to three primary forces driving change.

    1. The abundance of quality content available on the web. Students have access to more content than ever before, which changes the paradigm of the student/teacher relationship. The professor teaching in a classroom is not the primary method for accessing scholarly expertise; content is no longer bound by cost, location or time.
    2. Interactive applications and platforms on the web accessible due to cloud technology. Blogs, Slideshare and Learning Management Platforms such as Moodle, are just a few examples of tools that are changing how education (content) is delivered and accessed. Online learning, through MOOCs, either Coursera or CHFE12 (via Desire2Learn) are examples of learning that was not available ten, or even five years ago.
    3. Mobile devices with Internet connectivity capability.? Millions of people around the globe, even in third world countries are owners of mobile devices that connect to the Internet. This capability drives not just educational change, but cultural and societal change as well.

    2. Changes in Pedagogy
Education is becoming student focused, which means pedagogical methods are adapting and transforming accordingly.? During a webinar in week two of CFHE, Joel Hartman spoke of the new pedagogical models implemented at UCF. The new approach puts the student in the center, and provides a choice of five learning modalities. This approach is highly successful. A critical component to its success is educating faculty on the effective use of pedagogical methods in the various modalities. I wrote about these methods in-depth in a previous post.? Competency based learning, another approach uses a different pedagogy, one that focuses on the application of skill and knowledge through demonstration. Each are described in-depth below.

    1. Competency based learning either in face-to-face or online. Competency learning challenges the notion of ?seat-time? based upon the Carnegie Unit (time-based reference for measuring student achievement that is used by American colleges). Western Governors and Southern New Hampshire?s Innovation U (which I wrote about here) and University Now?? all examples of schools using competencies as a model for assessment and learning. Businesses in the community are supportive of this model, often partnering with colleges in the process.

?Another form of competency learning are adaptive learning platforms. Where student learning is customized through online programs that adapt and respond to students strengths and weaknesses. Knewton learning is an example of a company that delivers adaptive learning programs.

    2. Blended and Online learning that are based upon models of constructivism or? connectivism.? Students are involved and active participants within learning, either constructing their learning with content and student peers (constructivism), or connecting with nodes within a network, making connections and acquiring knowledge as a result. Learning is moving towards treating students as part of the learning, not as passive ?vessels?.

    3. Changing Models of Higher Ed
Below are the three directions that may emerge based upon the advancements and developments as discussed in the CFHE12 MOOC.

    1) The traditional college experience where students attend college or universities will change; will be augmented with online learning, flipped classrooms, and blended learning. The community will become part of the education experience, where students work within the community to solve problems (project based learning) or work as part of their education. Four years of attendance will be the exception, less will be the norm.

    2) Do-it-yourself college: ?Students will adopt the ?build-your-own-degree plan?. Colleges are becoming unbundled, which means students will be able to choose preferred courses, MOOCs and assessment of skill for credit. This model will grow as costs for college continue to be out-of-reach for the average family.

    3) Life long learning (competency based): Students will become learners for life, where learning is one long, continuous process. It will not stop after high school, or even after college, but will continue as learners need new skills for career change, job training or even personal interests. MOOCs will play a role, as will courses offered through other venues, perhaps face-to-face, online or through iTunes U.? This model has much potential.

    Conclusion
The future is bright for higher education. Resistance to change can be a significant barrier to the developments needed within education, but those that resist will eventually be forced to get on board or be left behind. Those that do change and adapt will have the opportunity to reach students as never before ? educate people of all ages to be productive, educated and contributing members of society. It all begins with embracing change, and changing our thinking.

aurilia strident: deliver wilburn: Why You Should Get Insect Pets for ...

We all know that nature has had millions of years to adapt, and we have 100s of thousands of species on Earth which have adapted to specific niches to exploit what?s available; Life will always find a way. Perhaps, it is for this reason that so many of our technological advances are based on our observations of nature. After all, it?s had quite a head start and adaptation and evolution are a brilliant master of engineering. So much so, that I?d like to make a recommendation for you if you are a parent with a curious child who you?d like some day to grow up and become a top rated engineer amongst the human civilization. My recommendation is this; when considering a pet why not consider an arthropod, or arachnid. Say what ? you ask? Why not get them an exotic type insect? Now you think I?ve totally lost it right. Well, I haven?t and let me explain. In finding an early curiosity and interest in the movements of insects, your child may develop a better sense of engineering our future robotics. You see, nature has already figured out many of the most efficient ways of moving around, and evolution has had a lot more practice at designing things than humans have. Borrowing ideas and concept for engineering from nature makes sense. It?s a good place to start. It is possible to better nature?s designs. In fact, we are already making more efficient solar cells than the photosynthesis process used by the leaves on trees. Now then, did you know that spider?s webs pound for pound are stronger than steel? Did you know that there are beetles species which can live where there is no rain or water by collecting the moisture from the morning dew as it rolls off their backs?Have you ever marveled at the giant ant colonies and how they build their habitat, consider this for a moment. How is it that all these creatures are so highly adapted? What can your child learn from observing them, the way they walk, hunt, operate ? their structure, mobility, strength, etc? There is a lot to be learned and if your child studies these pets and thinks about it, I just bet they?ll come up with future designs which will best the best that mankind has yet to come up with on our own.Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. Maybe I?ve convinced you, maybe I haven?t, but it?s something worth your consideration.

The University Of California Has A New Tulip ... - Business Insider

On the heels of Stanford University's new iPhone-driven logo change, the University of California -- whose Berkeley and UCLA sites are perhaps best well-known -- has also adopted a new look.

Gone is the ALL CAPS "we couldn't be bothered to design this properly" look.

In its place is a new "C" logo sitting in the bottom of what appears to be a tulip, but turns out to be a stylized open book.

Here are the old and new versions; underneath, watch a brief video explaining the redesign.?

Risks on the Rise: Making a Case for IT Disaster Recovery ...

According to the Forrester/Disaster Recovery Journal Business Continuity Preparedness Survey from 2011 Q4, the top increasing risks cited by a survey of decision-makers or influencers when it comes to IT planning and purchasing for business continuity were as follows:

(48%) ? Increased reliance on technology
(37%) ? Business complexity of our organization
(36%) ? Increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters
(33%) ? Increased reliance on third-parties (i.e., outsourcing, suppliers, etc.)
    (26%) ? Increased regulatory requirements
(25%) ? Increased threat of cyber attacks

An increased reliance on technology can be seen from the retail industry that must adapt to include digital transactions to the healthcare industry that relies on electronic patient data entry, information exchange, processing, etc., demarcating the shift from paper records to electronic health record systems (EHRs). [Read more about compliance regulations for each industry in our HIPAA Compliant Hosting and PCI Compliant Hosting white papers].

Critical applications are the lifeline of companies these days; emphasizing the importance of uptime and availability of hosting solutions as well as IT disaster recovery plans that can replicate systems and data when needed (IT disaster recovery plans are a subset of business continuity plans).

Third-parties can introduce more complexity into an organization?s business processes and workflow. They can also introduce potential new or increased risks, depending on the partner?s security practices and general security awareness. Check for all aspects of their administrative security controls, including security training, up-to-date audit reports, documented policies and contractual obligations.

Subsequent drivers of increased risk are seen below, including the geographic distribution of the organization and financial, political and social instability.

    Drivers of Increased Risk

    Drivers of Increased Risk

The survey asked respondents how many times in the last five years they had to invoke a business continuity plan ? while 39 percent said never, 18 percent said they had to at least once, and 15 percent said twice. Twelve percent had to invoke a business continuity plan greater than five times in the last five years.

Natural disasters and extreme weather (winter storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.) were the cause of 55 percent of invocations, and floods accounted for 28 percent. As was seen in the recent Hurricane Sandy disaster, it is ideal to have an IT disaster recovery/business continuity plan in place that is regularly tested to avoid major data loss, or extensive downtime. While the extent of natural disasters cannot always be anticipated, having a plan in place can help expedite recovery. If seeking a managed hosting partner or an IT disaster recovery production site, choosing a facility in a low-risk geographical location can help ensure data and application availability. Find out why the Midwest and Michigan are great places for safe and secure data centers.

Power outages account for 49 percent of business continuity plan invocations. If you?re outsourcing to a data center operator, research their high availability server hosting capabilities. With a high availability hosting infrastructure, you should have:

    • Power from separate utility providers
    • Multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
    • N+1 (fully redundant) cooling, generators and batteries
    • Remote offsite backup

Multiple Internet Service providers (ISPs) allows for automatic network failover between providers and network circuits should an anomaly occur. Dual routers and switches also ensure your network is always connected. If power does go out, your data center should be equipped with backup power, including dual generators should one fail.

    Online Tech's Data Center Generators

    Online Tech's Data Center Generators

Dual UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) battery backup systems can provide emergency power when the input power source fails. Find out more about specific data center features that can eliminate the risk of a power outage. IT failure accounts for 36 percent of invocations. While not always avoidable, initial strategic design and ongoing maintenance of redundant networks can help protect against failure.
