PRINCETON, N.J. -- A leading historian of American leaders in war and espionage said the exploits of David Petraeus, John Allen and the Tampa, Fla., Centcom crew seem tame by the standards of the men who led the nation in World War II and the Cold War.

"Marital fidelity was not a requirement of the great commanders in World War II," said Princeton professor Evan Thomas, whose latest book, Ike's Bluff: President Eisenhower's Secret Battle to Save the World, was published this fall to good reviews.

In an era long before technology made every verbal gesture permanent, and when the press was kept in the dark and at a distance from the top brass, the two worlds of public image and private behavior almost never collided -- and never made it into the daily papers.

"General Douglas MacArthur had a mistress and General Dwight Eisenhower was rumored to have had an affair with his driver, Kay Summersby," said Thomas, who has also written extensively about the CIA and its wartime predecessor.

"General William 'Wild Bill' Donovan, the chief of the Office of Strategic Services, the WWII precursor to the CIA, was a notorious ladies' man," said Thomas. "And the top OSS spy, later Cold War chief of the CIA, Allen Dulles, had numerous affairs. It was said that every time he began a new affair, he gave his wife Clover a diamond."

Thomas, whose measured biography praises Eisenhower's calm sense of command, said that Eisenhower, as president, might not have asked for or accepted former CIA Director Petraeus' resignation.

"I don't know what Ike would have said to Petraeus," Thomas added, "but he might have said, 'Get back to work.'"

A wireless sensor system created for medical rehabilitation has been shown to be useful in assessing health risks of ?smoke divers,? firefighters who have to enter burning buildings.

Researchers in Norway recently tested a U.S. Army-funded warning system called ESUMS that measures body movement and vital signs to help determine ?heat stress? and other physiological dangers smoke divers face. ?The equipment we used worked perfectly and the method correctly identified the risk situations that we simulated, so the trials showed that the method could be a useful way of determining whether or not a smoke-diver is in danger,? project manager Trine Seeberg, a senior scientist at Norwegian research organization SINTEF, said in a press release.

Firefighters in a training facility at Rygge Airport in Norway wore chest belts to measure heart rate and skin temperature. The belt transmitted data via Bluetooth to each firefighter?s smartphone. Accelerometers and gyroscopes also provide information on body position and activity level.

In consultation with smoke divers and in laboratory trials before the field test, SINTEF developed algorithms to quantify how the body responds to heat stress. A smartphone app runs the algorithms to determine a ?hazard threshold score? on a 10-point scale, and the phone sends this score to a central monitoring station away from the fire.

?If the score is more than 8, the smoke-diver is being exposed to a high level of stress and should abandon the operation, while a score of 2 shows that the person is in good physical condition and is operating at a level of activity that is not hazardous to health,? Seeberg said.

?These are important data, because smoke-divers are exposed to severe stresses,? she explained. ?They often operate under conditions of high temperature, wear insulating clothing, and have to carry equipment that can weigh as much as 15-20 kilos [33-44 pounds]. In practice, it is an extremely demanding task merely to be in a warm room with such clothing and with a pack on your back.?

SINTEF researchers won a ?pHealth? innovation award in 2010 at the International Conference on Wearable Micro and Nano Technologies for Personalized Health for its method of calculating risk. However, Seeberg says the measurement system needs more work, such as integration into firefighter safety gear, before it is ready for commercialization.

SINTEF originally worked with the U.S. Army?s Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) to develop the technology for home-based rehab of patients with congestive heart failure. The $3.6 million project produced the sensor belt, the smartphone app and desktop software for nurses connected to a server in a traditional healthcare setting.

There is no news like school teachers news because it is business that affects your school-aged-children directly or indirectly. Some teacher news information is quintessentially interesting and one of the most interesting is the news that teachers are finally looking out for each other in a most creative way.

Foster Parents Anywhere?: Foster Parent Support Groups

Part of my job at Hands Across the Water is creating, supporting, and maintaining a foster parent support group.? I was very excited to take on this portion of my job because I enjoy sharing stories about foster care.? I hoped that my crazy experiences as a foster parent could be valuable to others.? I looked forward to listening to the stories of others and comparing notes.? I set up the classes, advertised them, and nobody came.? I waited a few months and sent the word around to different places and still nobody came.? I changed the day and time to encourage people to come and I am still at zero attendance.

Hmmm.? In the meantime, I jumped at the opportunity to substitute as a facilitator for another support group at HATW, the A-OK group for parents who have adopted older children.? This group has been established for? long time and has some regularly attending members.? I hoped to gain some ideas for my own group by hanging out with an already established group.? The experience was amazing!

Three families came and shared their situations and talked about their challenges.? I was concerned that my experiences would not apply to their situations but I was wrong.? Kids with behavior problems share many similar characteristics.? I learned a great deal and I wished that I had brought my husband with me.? It is wonderful to be around people who are seeking out solutions to their issues.? These are people who will not give up on their children and will continue to learn and explore until they find a method that works for their children.?Their situation is similar to?older children in foster care.? ?Many people outside of the foster care world wonder why a foster parent stays in a difficult situation when they can send the child to another home and just?give up.??Foster parents know that if they become another step on the ladder in a long line of foster homes that the only one paying the price is the foster child.? Many refuse to give up and continue to try and help the child in their care.???It is inspiring to be?in the same room?with people who are so committed to their children.?

In my opinion, raising children is a life long commitment no matter how they arrive as part of the family.? Biological children come with disabilities and behavior challenges just as adopted children do.? Foster kids?always bring along emotional baggage when they arrive in the home to add to the challenge of parenting.? I can?honestly say that my biological children have caused me more grief than my foster kids in some cases.? We never?know the path we will be?traveling when we become a parent.?

That is why support groups are so important!? We can talk to each other and share the burden.? We can get new ideas or?help out another family.?We can form new friendships with others who have chosen to ride in the same boat that we have.? BOJ Shirakawa says to pursue powerful easing, mindful of yen risks

TOKYO (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said the central bank will continue to pursue powerful monetary easing, taking into account the risk that rises in the yen can hurt Japan's economy.

But he stressed that flooding markets with cash alone won't nudge up prices in countries like Japan where interest rates are already near zero, repeating his call for government efforts to boost growth potential such as deregulation and structural reform.

"We are always watching with great interest how currency moves could affect the economy and prices," Shirakawa said at a seminar on Monday, warning that yen rises can undermine the economy by hurting exports and business sentiment.

"The BOJ's powerful monetary easing has had some effect in stemming yen rises by pushing down interest rates," he said, signaling that the pain from increases in the yen's exchange value will be among key factors the central bank will scrutinize in guiding policy.

But Shirakawa warned that there was no clear relationship seen between the size of the monetary base and exchange-rate moves, countering views held by some lawmakers and analysts that the BOJ could weaken the yen by pumping money into the economy more aggressively.

Shirakawa also shrugged off calls for the central bank to directly buy foreign bonds, repeating the bank's view that it was prohibited from doing so under the current law that gives the finance ministry - not the BOJ - jurisdiction over exchange-rate policy.

He offered a downbeat assessment of Japan's economy, saying it is expected to stagnate for the time being with worsening relations with China damaging trade and Japan's tourism industry.

"Exports and output are likely to remain weak, and domestic demand won't increase enough to make up for the weakness in exports," he said.

The BOJ eased monetary policy for the second straight month in October as slowing global demand and fallout from a territorial row with China nudge the world's third largest economy into recession.

Data published on Monday showed Japan's economy shrank 0.9 percent in the three months to September, marking the first contraction in three quarters, keeping the central bank under pressure to offer further stimulus.

Economics Minister Seiji Maehara kept up the heat, telling reporters on Monday that he expects the central bank to pursue powerful easing.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A few hours after the Los Angeles Lakers' top brass abruptly fired coach Mike Brown and threw their season into turmoil before mid-November, Brown's former players demonstrated why there's still ample reason to think this team can be saved.

The Lakers should find out soon whether Phil Jackson gets the chance to do the saving ? again.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 points, Pau Gasol added 14 points and 16 rebounds, and the Lakers doubled their win total with a 101-77 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night.

Jordan Hill scored 14 points for the Lakers, who were uniformly stunned by Brown's dismissal after just 18 months on the job. Following a bumpy first half against Golden State under interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff, they pulled away in the third quarter with a 25-9 run led by Bryant, who also had nine rebounds and seven assists.

"I think everybody didn't know how to react to it emotionally," Bryant said. "Everybody had to just go about their business and play basketball. ... A lot of the emotion that was picked up was kind of unleashed when we played."

The comfortable victory capped one of the most tumultuous days in recent history for a franchise that's never short on drama. With the high-priced veteran club off to a Western Conference-worst 1-4 start following a winless preseason, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and owner Jim Buss abruptly dismissed Brown, informing players during their morning shootaround.

Bickerstaff ran the Lakers as the interim coach, but the veteran NBA bench boss isn't likely to be a candidate for the full-time job. Kupchak is searching for a replacement, possibly making a selection before the Lakers' next game on Sunday against Sacramento.

The Lakers' crowd quickly made its choice known: A chant of "We want Phil!" rose out of the stands while Bryant shot a free throw in the third quarter, and echoed a few more times later in the half.

"I can understand why," Bickerstaff said. "The guy's got the rings."

Jackson, the 11-time NBA champion coach who won five rings in two previous stints running the Lakers, is near the top of Kupchak's list again, the GM acknowledged. Mike D'Antoni, the former Knicks and Suns coach, also is thought to be a prime candidate.

Bryant said he would be thoroughly happy with Jackson, D'Antoni or former Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw in charge. Bryant's injury struggles during Jackson's final season would give him particular motivation for a third stint together.

"I wasn't able to give him my real self because I was playing on one leg," Bryant said. "It's always kind of eaten away at me that in the last year of his career ... I couldn't give him everything I had because I was playing on one knee."

Dwight Howard had six points and eight rebounds while playing just 24 minutes for the Lakers in his ongoing return from offseason back surgery. Steve Nash, the other major addition to the club, watched from behind the bench, missing his fourth straight game with a small fracture in his leg. Nash will be out for at least another week, the Lakers announced after the game.

After the protracted drama between Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy and the six-time All-Star center, Howard met questions about the Lakers' coaching staff with a smile and silence.

"I'm going to keep that to myself," Howard said. "I learned my lesson last year."

Brown never got the chance to integrate the two stars into his new offense while they were dogged by health issues. Kupchak and Buss still needed to see more progress than the Lakers managed in the past six weeks, particularly on defense ? and they saw it against the Warriors, who managed just 33.7 percent shooting and made 19 turnovers.

"We were just out of sync, no excuse," Golden State coach Mark Jackson said. "If you're going to beat a good team on the road, you've got to take care of the basketball. We came in with the mindset to run, and they outscored us even in fast-break points. Just disappointed overall."

Stephen Curry scored 18 points and Klay Thompson had 15 for the Warriors, who have lost five straight to the Lakers overall, and nine in a row at Staples Center since March 2008.

"I think we played well, but the score doesn't say that," Curry said. "Defensively, we did a pretty good job. We're just undersized down there, trying to battle the boards and the paint."

The Lakers' offensive struggles evaporated in the third quarter while they leaped to an 18-point lead over the undermanned Warriors, who struggled to contend inside without injured center Andrew Bogut.

Darius Morris had career highs of 10 points and five rebounds while playing the majority of the Lakers' minutes at point guard. Los Angeles' reserves have been largely ineffective during Brown's tenure, but Morris and Hill led a spirited effort against the Warriors, outscoring their counterparts with Golden State 37-17.

Election won't end abortion/contraception debate

NEW YORK (AP) ? Democrats and liberal advocacy groups have declared victory in what they called a Republican "war on women" and are celebrating the pivotal defeats of some GOP candidates who took rigid stands against abortion.

However, the issues in dispute ? notably access to contraception and abortion ? are far from settled, and social conservatives are already girding for new confrontations.

"We're going back to the drawing board," anti-abortion leader Marjorie Dannenfelser told fellow conservatives at a post-election gathering.

Dannensfelser said her organization, the Susan B. Anthony List, would seek to back candidates who can argue against abortion "with compassion and love." In an interview, she said Republican nominee Mitt Romney was too defensive on abortion-related issues and mentioned Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Indiana Gov.-elect Mike Pence as potential presidential candidates who intrigued her.

For activists supporting family planning programs and access to abortion, the election produced a series of triumphs, starting with the re-election of President Barack Obama. Groups such as Planned Parenthood and the National Organization for Women campaigned vigorously for him, and he won about 55 percent of women's votes.

"This is a resounding victory for women," said Planned Parenthood's president, Cecile Richards. "This election sends a powerful and unmistakable message ... that the American people do not want politicians to meddle in our personal medical decisions, and that politicians demean and dismiss women at their own peril."

The differences between Obama and Romney on some "war on women" issues were stark. Obama vowed to require insurance companies to cover birth control, preserve federal funding for Planned Parenthood, and protect access to abortion. Romney took opposing positions, and said he'd like to outlaw abortion except in cases of rape, incest and threat to the mother's life.

According to exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and TV networks, 59 percent of voters said abortion should be legal either in all or most cases, while 36 percent said it should be illegal all or most of the time.

Planned Parenthood and its allies celebrated the outcomes of a host of specific races, including the defeats of two Tea Party-backed GOP Senate candidates whose chances plummeted after widely criticized remarks about rape and abortion. In Missouri, Todd Akin said women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in instances of "legitimate rape," while Indiana's Richard Mourdock said pregnancy resulting from rape was "something God intended."

Akin's rival, Claire McCaskill, will be one of a record 20 women in the next Senate, 17 of them Democrats. Among them will be the first openly gay senator, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, and the first Asian-American woman, Hawaii's Mazie Hirono.

In New Hampshire, wins by two Democrats in House races gives the state, which has two female senators, the first all-women delegation to Congress. It also has a newly elected woman as governor, Maggie Hassan.

Even though the abortion/contraception debate gained prominence during the campaign, exit polls indicated it wasn't the paramount concern for many women worried about economic problems.

Elisabeth Jacobs, a fellow in governance studies at the nonpartisan Brookings Institution think tank, suggested there was a connection between the two issues that perhaps cost the Republicans the election.

"It's pretty clear that at the last minute, a lot of women made a decision that Obama really understood what their economic concerns were," she said. "Yes, they want control over their own body ... but decisions over health care can limit their ability to control economics as well."

She said conservative Republicans face a challenge: "How can you package the pro-life message in a way that speaks to women's economic concerns? I don't know how they do that."

A conservative domestic policy specialist, Jennifer Marshall of the Heritage Foundation, said Republican candidates would be wise to broaden the scope of their anti-abortion message to convey interest in "the welfare of the mother and the community around her." She said candidates willing to talk openly about abortion issues would be more agile at articulating their positions than those who shied away from the topic.

One complication for the Republicans was the party platform, which opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest.

David Welch, a former GOP National Committee research director and campaign adviser to John McCain, blamed Tea Party activists for this hard line

"The Tea Party folks who've started this race to the bottom, of who can be more conservative, have really done the party damage," Welch said. "We'll always be a pro-life party, but we have to be compassionate about it."

Going forward, anti-abortion activists and organizations will use a variety of strategies to pursue their cause under an Obama presidency.

At the state level, there will be continued efforts in Republican-controlled legislatures to enact laws restricting access to abortion.

"We refuse to relent simply because of the presidential outcome," said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life. His group plans to push for defunding of Planned Parenthood and for additional preconditions before abortions can be performed.

Roman Catholic leaders, along with some conservative Protestants, say they will intensify legal challenges to the portion of Obama's health care overhaul that requires employers' health plans to cover contraception for their female employees. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says this contraception mandate ? which exempts houses of worship but applies to faith-affiliated employers ? is a violation of religious freedom.

There's also the possibility of outright defiance.

The Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said the Obama administration and the Catholic Church "are on a collision course."

"It is therefore time to recommit ourselves to the basics: a clear proclamation of the truth ... and an unwavering commitment to civil disobedience," he said.

Some supporters of women's rights expressed regret that their cherished issues had become so entangled in political partisanship.

"It was not long ago that issues like fair pay, abortion rights, health reform, and family and medical leave had bipartisan support, said Debra Ness, president of the National Partnership for Women and Families. "We hope they will all have bipartisan support again very soon."
