After Islamophobic hate crime in New York City, mayor wants public to 'keep death in perspective'

Sunando Sen

? Christie M. Farriella / New York Daily News
The Passport photo of 46-year-old Sunando Sen, pushed to his death because a woman thought he was Muslim

A horrific crime if we've ever seen one--and a reminder that Islamophobia affects many communities outside Muslim ones.

From the AP:

A woman who told police she shoved a man to his death off a subway platform into the path of a train because she hates Muslims and thought he was one was charged Saturday with murder as a hate crime, prosecutors said.
.....

"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up," Menendez told police, according to the district attorney's office.

.....

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday urged residents to keep Sen's death in perspective as he touted new historic lows in the city's annual homicide and shooting totals.

"It's a very tragic case, but what we want to focus on today is the overall safety in New York," Bloomberg told reporters following a police academy graduation.

What kind of perspective is Bloomberg referencing? If someone said "I shoved a Jew in front of a train because I hate Jews," would Bloomberg be touting drops in the city's annual homicide and shooting totals? Quite an insensitive comment, at the very least.

After this news broke, Twitter was aflutter with people pointing to Pamela Geller as one culprit pushing anti-Muslim sentiment in the city. Geller's organization, the American Freedom Defense Initiative, recently put up a new crop of ads that features the World Trade Center burning with a Qu'ran verse printed to the right of the towers.

Geller's role in promoting anti-Muslim sentiment of the sort that leads to Islamophobic hate crimes should not be in dispute. But what should also be highlighted is how New York City's own police force has promoted anti-Muslim bigotry time and time again, from surveillance of Muslims that places the whole community under suspicion to training officers with an Islamophobic flick.

Friend of Mondoweiss Lizzy Ratner made this point in her excellent piece on Geller in The Nation:

Though Geller and her crew are fringe elements, they are not random or spontaneous, idiopathic lesions on the healthier whole. They are, quite sadly, part of this country, outcroppings of something big and ugly that has been seeping and creeping through the body politic for years. In the decade since September 11, anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bigotry has become an entrenched feature of our political and social landscape. It lurks in the hidden corners of everyday life - in classrooms and offices and housing complexes - as well as in the ugly scenes that occasionally explode into public consciousness. In the special registration of Middle Eastern men after 9/11. In the vicious campaign against Debbie Almontaser, the American Muslim school teacher who tried to open the Arabic-language Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA) and was tarred as an extremist. In the attack on the Park51 Islamic center, more commonly (if less accurately) known as the Ground Zero mosque. In the New York Police Department's selective surveillance of Muslim communities. And that's just New York City. All of these instances should have called on our horror and outrage, and in all too many of them, society hasn't lived up.
This crime appears to be the latest manifestation of New York City's Islamophobia. This time, it cost a life.

Eric Sprott: Why Are Investors Buying 50 Times More Physical Silver ...

By Eric Sprott

Why are (Smart) Investors Buying 50 Times More Physical Silver than Gold?

As long-time students of precious metals investing, there are certain things we understand. One is that, historically, the availability ratio of silver to gold has had a direct influence on the price of the metals. The current availability ratio of physical silver to gold for investment purposes is approximately 3:1. So, why is it that investors are allocating their dollars to silver at a much higher ratio? What is it that these ?smart? investors understand? Let?s have a look at the numbers and see if it?s time for investors to do as a wise man once said and ?follow the money.?

Average annual gold mine production is approximately 80 million ounces, which together with an estimated average 50?million ounces of annual recycled gold, totals around 130 million ounces available per year. In comparison, annual mined silver production has averaged around 750 million ounces, while recycled silver is estimated at 250?million ounces per year, which adds up to approximately 1 billion ounces. Using this data, there is roughly 8?times more silver available to buy than there is gold. However, not all gold and silver is available for investment purposes, due to their use in industrial applications. It is estimated that for investment purposes (jewelry, bars and coins), the annual availability of gold is roughly 120 million ounces, and of silver it is 350 million ounces. Therefore, the ratio of physical silver availability to gold availability is 350/120, or ~3:1.1

Now, let?s examine how investors are allocating their investments between gold and silver. The data below is from the US Mint showing gold and silver sales in ounces:

Table1.gif
Source: US Mint (www.usmint.gov)

As you can see, investors are choosing to buy silver at a ratio to gold that is well above what is available. This uptrend doesn?t show any signs of slowing either. The ratio of the physical silver to gold is both rising and extraordinarily above the availability ratio of 3:1.

We can also use other data such as the most recent issues of the Sprott Physical Gold and Silver Trusts. The last Gold Trust issue in September 2012 raised US$393 million and the last Silver Trust issue raised US$310 million. On the basis of prices for each metal at the time of issue, we could purchase ~213 thousand ounces of gold and ~9.1 million ounces of silver. This represents a purchase ratio of 43:1.

If we examine ETF holdings in both gold and silver, we note that in the period from 2007 to 2012, the increase in silver holdings amounted to 12,000 tonnes, compared to 1,200 tonnes of gold ? meaning, investors purchased ten times more silver than gold.

These are only three factual data points to consider, but there are other indications that silver investment demand is way out of line with availability. Our favourite question to the bullion dealers we meet, is to ask the ratio of their dollar sales in gold versus silver. The answer is that dollar sales are equal, which means that physical silver sales relative to gold are greater than 50:1.

A recent news headline on Mineweb read, ?Silver Sales to Outshine Gold in India.2? It went on to quote a bullion dealer that ?investors and jewelry lovers prefer silver jewelry these days.? As the largest importer of gold in the world, it would be impossible for India to purchase an equivalent amount of silver, as it would require more than one billion ounces, essentially more than the current annual mine production.

While these last two confirmations of silver demand are anecdotal, the statistics from the US Mint, the ETFs, and our Physical Trust issues, are factual.

For the time being, the silver price is essentially set in the paper market where the daily average trade on the Comex is approximately 300 million ounces. An outrageous number when you compare it to the daily mine production of about 2 million ounces. As Bart Chilton, Commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission stated on October 26, 2010, ?I believe there have been repeated attempts to influence prices in silver markets. There have been fraudulent efforts to persuade and deviously control that price. Based on what I have been told and reviewed in publicly available documents, I believe violations to the Commodity Exchange Act have taken place in the silver market and any such violation of the law in this regard should be prosecuted.?3

Which brings us back to the phrase ?Follow the money.? In our view, it is almost inconceivable that investors would allocate as many dollars to silver as they would to gold, but that is what the data shows.

The silver investment market is very small. While the dollar value of gold in the world approaches $9 trillion, the value of silver in the forms of jewelry, coins, bars and silverware is estimated at around $150 billion (5 billion ounces at $30 per ounce). This is a ratio of 60:1 in dollar terms.4

How long can investors continue to buy silver at the current ratios when the availability for investment is only 3:1? We are surprised that the price of silver has remained at such a depressed level compared to gold. Historically, the price ratio between gold and silver has been 16:1, when both were currencies. Today the ratio is 55:1, so what are the numbers telling us? We believe this is one of those times when smart investors will be well rewarded to ?Follow the money.?

On behalf of all of us at Sprott, I wish you safe and happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.

P.S. ? US Mint Sold Out of Silver Eagle Bullion Coins Until January 7, 2013
The Mint recently informed authorized purchasers that all remaining inventories of 2012-dated Silver Eagle bullion coins had sold out and no additional coins would be struck. Since the 2013-dated coins will not be available to order until January 7, 2013, this leaves a three week void for the Mint?s most popular bullion offering.

Utah defends its hands-off health insurance exchange plan | The ...

(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Governor Gary Herbert on Dec. 12, 2012 as he releases his budget recommendations at Granite Technical Institute in Salt Lake City.

Utah expected its federal high-risk pool ? subsidized health coverage for the sick and uninsurable ? to be an easy sell.

But it proved easier than state officials ever imagined.

?

Examining exchange plans

In letters to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week, several advocacy groups complained about the lack of clarity and transparency surrounding Utah?s plans for Avenue H. Among them: a physicians group, federally certified community health clinics, AARP Utah, Voices for Utah Children and the Utah Health Policy Project.

The Salt Lake Tribune obtained parts of Utah?s exchange blueprint through a records request. They make promises, say advocates, but don?t say how the state will live up to them.

?There?s so much in there that?s theoretical,? said Judi Hilman, executive director of the Utah Health Policy Project. ?If I were the feds, I would agree to a federally facilitated exchange or give Utah conditional approval subject to our meeting certain requirements and deadlines.?

See the embedded documents for details of Utah?s blueprint.

That?s because hospitals, looking to get paid for treating uninsured patients, did the heavy lifting. They filled out and submitted papers on behalf of patients and, in some cases, paid their monthly premiums, no strings attached.

"People who have a financial interest in making things work will find a way to do it, and do it quickly," said Utah Gov. Gary Herbert?s health adviser, Norm Thurston, citing the experience as proof that Utah?s hands-off, private-market approach to another Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirement ? health exchanges ? will work.

Exchanges, online insurance marketplaces, are designed to be a "no wrong door" portal to health coverage where consumers can compare plans, see if they?re eligible for federal subsidies to purchase them, or enroll in low-income programs such as Medicaid.

"The idea is you can enter this door and walk out with coverage," said Lincoln Nehring, a health policy analyst at Voices for Utah Children.

Utah already has a "shop" exchange for small businesses, Avenue H, which the governor has asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to declare as good enough for Obamacare.

Herbert promises to open it to individuals and larger employers and to enforce new insurance price controls and consumer protections. But he argues the customer outreach and hand-holding required to help people navigate insurance options are a waste of money and unrealistic.

His proposal is being viewed as a test case of just how much leeway the Obama administration is willing to give states in running their own exchanges.

HHS will not comment on the negotiations, but Thurston said sticking points are mostly on small, technical issues.

story continues below

It?s the details that worry consumer advocates, who are pushing for greater clarity on Utah?s plan and fear Herbert?s vision for Avenue H falls woefully short.

Of top concern, they say, is Utah?s poor track record in linking eligible Utahns with health safety nets.

The state ranked 50th in enrolling eligible children in Medicaid and the Children?s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in 2010, said Nehring, noting that 80 percent of the state?s 102,400 children are eligible for these programs.

"Utah families are in particular need," he said, "of the ACA?s vision of an exchange that will connect [them] with all their health coverage options."

Under the ACA, those shopping on an exchange must first be screened to see if they?re entitled to Medicaid or CHIP. They are also screened for federal tax credits to apply toward the purchase of their coverage.

States are supposed to hire navigators to help people pick plans best suited to their needs. The rules say they have to provide interpretive services, aides for people with disabilities, and publish "culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach" materials.

But Herbert?s advisers argue these services are widely available in the community.

Dell C1760nw Color Printer

The Dell C1760nw Color Printer is a step up from the Dell C1660w Color Printer, adding Ethernet connectivity and a bypass tray, using a slightly faster print engine, and offering slightly lower running costs. It has solid (if unspectacular) speed and output quality, and is a respectable choice as a color printer for a micro or home office.

The C1760nw's print engine is LED based, using light-emitting diodes rather than lasers as its light source. LED printers, though, share many of the characteristics of lasers and are considered laser class. They tend to be smaller than true lasers, however, and the C1760nw is no exception, measuring 8.9 by 15.5 by 11.8 inches (HWD), the same size as the Dell C1660w, though at 23 pounds it's a bit over 2 pounds heavier. Still, it's easy enough to share a desk with.

The C1760nw's paper capacity is 150 sheets, plus a 10-sheet bypass tray so you can easily switch to alternate paper stock. Its paper capacity makes it best for relatively light-duty use in a micro or home office, or as a personal printer in any size office. Like the Dell C1660nw, it lacks an auto-duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, as well as a port for a USB thumb drive.

The C1760nw is compatible with the recently introduced Dell Mobile Print for Android, and will also work with the iOS and Windows RT versions of the app when they're released in early 2013.

The C1760nw offers USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity. I tested it over a wired network with the printer's driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

Dell C1760nw Color Printer

Printing Speed
On our business applications suite, (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), I timed the C1760nw at an effective 4.8 pages per minute (ppm) a decent speed and good for its 15 page per minute monochrome and 12 page per minute color printing rating that is based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content. The C1760nw, rated at 12 pages per minute mono and 10 pages per minute for color printing was a trifle slower, at 4.2 ppm. The Editors' Choice Samsung CLP-415nw, which was rated at 19 ppm for both color and monochrome printing, zipped through our business suite at 6.0 ppm.

Output Quality
The C1760nw's overall output, though solid enough, was a touch below par for a color laser, with slightly below-par text, and average graphics and photo quality. Text is fine for general business use, though not for uses that require very small fonts.

With graphics, for the most part colors were bold and well saturated, but some black backgrounds appeared faded. Thin colored lines were often hard to see. Most illustrations showed dithering (graininess), and posterization (abrupt changes in color or tone where they should be gradual) was visible in a couple of images that tend to bring it out. The graphics are okay for PowerPoint presentations, though I would hesitate to hand them to people I was seeking to impress.

Photo quality is fine for in-house business use, though whether the quality is good enough for use in company newsletters depends on how picky you are. Photo prints frequently suffered from some loss in detail, particularly in bright areas.

Running Costs
The C1760nw will cost you a little more up front than the Dell C1660w, but its lower running costs (3.5 cents per monochrome page and 18.5 cents per color page, compared with 4 cents mono and 21 cents color for the Dell C1660w) will help you recoup the price difference over time. In addition, you get a faster print engine (as was borne out in our testing), Ethernet, and a 10-sheet bypass tray.

The Editors' Choice Samsung CLP-415NW has marginally higher claimed running costs, at 3.7 cents per monochrome page and 19 cents per color page. It does offer a faster print speed, plus a substantially larger paper capacity (250 sheets) and better output quality at a comparable price. Its higher paper capacity makes it appropriate for heavier-duty printing and slightly larger offices than the C1760nw. The Samsung CLP-415NW is still a good choice for micro or home offices, but it's too large to easily share a desk with. That's one area in which the Dell C1760nw Color Printer beats it hands down.

Top 10 console game searches from Google > Gamezone > View ...

by Han Cilliers (Lola)??Posted Thursday, December 20, 2012 7:50:27 AM

?

Google supplied MCV with an alphabetised list of the Top 10 console video game queries from January 1st to December 11th 2012. The list mostly consists of quarter four releases, with a few surprises, let?s take a look.

Top10.JPG

  • Assassin's Creed 3
  • Black Ops 2
  • Borderlands 2
  • FIFA 12
  • FIFA 13
  • GTA 5
  • Halo 4
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Skylanders
  • Skyrim

What is interesting is that four out of the 10 titles were NOT released in quarter four; these are Mass Effect 3, GTA V, FIFA 12 and Skyrim. Mass Effect 3 was released in March 2012 and GTA 5 is due next year.

We of course had the massive fallout of the Mass Effect 3 ending that had gamers in a frenzy and GTA 5 seems to be one of the most anticipated games this decade.

Even more interesting is that FIFA 12 was released in September 2011 and Skyrim in November 2011, yet these two titles still featured under the top 10 downloads for 2012. The longevity of FIFA 12 and Skyrim is astounding.

Another noteworthy mention is the inclusion of Skylanders. As MCV pointed out, ?The toy-game crossover has been a retail phenomenon, making more money than any other game in the first five months of this year.? This indicates the massive potential in the casual gaming sector within the video games market.

The list is limited to only console game searches and does not reflect the overall 2012 video game trends. Popular mobile game Angry Birds and free-to-play PC title League of Legends would probably also be on the list if the search included all platforms.

When the ice melts, the Earth spews fire

Dec. 19, 2012 ? It has long been known that volcanic activity can cause short-term variations in climate. Now, researchers at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany), together with colleagues from Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) have found evidence that the reverse process also occurs: Climate affects volcanic activity.

Their study is now online in the international journal Geology.

In 1991, it was a disaster for the villages nearby the erupting Philippine volcano Pinatubo. But the effects were felt even as far away as Europe. The volcano threw up many tons of ash and other particles into the atmosphere causing less sunlight than usual to reach Earth's surface. For the first few years after the eruption, global temperatures dropped by half a degree. In general, volcanic eruptions can have a strong short-term impact on climate. Conversely, the idea that climate may also affect volcanic eruptions on a global scale and over long periods of time is completely new. Researchers at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany) and Harvard University in Massachusetts (USA) have now found strong evidence for this relationship from major volcanic eruptions around the Pacific Ocean over the past 1 million years. They have presented their results in the latest issue of the international journal "Geology."

The basic evidence for the discovery came from the work of the Collaborative Research Centre "Fluids and Volatiles in Subduction Zones (SFB 574). For more than ten years the project has been extensively exploring volcanoes of Central America. "Among others pieces of evidence, we have observations of ash layers in the seabed and have reconstructed the history of volcanic eruptions for the past 460,000 years," says GEOMAR volcanologist Dr Steffen Kutterolf, who has been with SFB 574 since its founding. Particular patterns started to appear. "There were periods when we found significantly more large eruptions than in others" says Kutterolf, the lead author of the Geology article. After comparing these patterns with the climate history, there was an amazing match. The periods of high volcanic activity followed fast, global temperature increases and associated rapid ice melting.

To expand the scope of the discoveries, Dr Kutterolf and his colleagues studied other cores from the entire Pacific region. These cores had been collected as part of the International Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and its predecessor programmes. They record more than a million years of Earth's history. "In fact, we found the same pattern from these cores as in Central America" says geophysicist Dr Marion Jegen from GEOMAR, who also participated in the recent study.Together with colleagues at Harvard University, the geologists and geophysicists searched for a possible explanation. They found it with the help of geological computer models. "In times of global warming, the glaciers are melting on the continents relatively quickly. At the same time the sea level rises. The weight on the continents decreases, while the weight on the oceanic tectonic plates increases. Thus, the stress changes within in the Earth to open more routes for ascending magma" says Dr Jegen.

The rate of global cooling at the end of the warm phases is much slower, so there are less dramatic stress changes during these times. "If you follow the natural climate cycles, we are currently at the end of a really warm phase. Therefore, things are volcanically quieter now. The impact from human-made warming is still unclear based on our current understanding" says Dr Kutterolf. The next step is to investigate shorter-term historical variations to better understand implications for the present day.

Cardio ActivitiesArticle Directory - Duetzulema89's blog

Article Focus: Cardio
If you've considered taking up a more active lifestyle, you've most definitely heard of "cardio activities". Cardio plays an important role in many fitness routines, and performing cardio exercise is a great way to keep your heart and body healthy. The best thing about cardio activities is that people at all fitness levels can perform them.

Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise is defined as any type of physical exercise, performed at moderate but increasing levels of intensity, over extended periods of time. The word "aerobic" means "with oxygen"; therefore, aerobic exercise refers to the body's use of oxygen throughout the activity. Cardio exercises are aimed at increasing your heart rate, and can help you to effectively burn calories.

Most people immediately think of weight loss when considering cardio activities. While it is true that cardio and aerobic exercise will increase metabolism, and result in a loss of fat mass, there are other very important health benefits to consider. Taking part in cardio activities goes way beyond the average weight loss program.

Cardio activities and aerobic exercise can help to:

1. Tone muscles throughout the body, resulting in improved blood circulation and reduced blood pressure

2. Strengthen cardiovascular muscles to increase the pumping efficiency of the heart

3. Strengthen respiratory muscles to promote smoother, unlabored breathing

4. Increase the number of red blood cells, resulting in improved transport of oxygen throughout the body

Regular and disciplined aerobic exercise can help to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Taking part in an active cardio exercise program also helps lower the risk of other health problems including respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Cardio activities are not limited to members of expensive fitness clubs. Some of the most common cardio exercises are:

1. Walking: This is one cardio activity that you're already doing, everyday! Walking is a very beneficial, low-impact exercise that can be done virtually everywhere. It is one of a few aerobics exercises that can be incorporated into any type of lifestyle, and best of all it's free! A 15-30 minute walk around the mall will allow your body to lose as many calories as you would on a treadmill. You can increase your caloric and fat loss by increasing the pace and rhythm of your walks.

2. Running and Jogging: Like walking, jogging and running can be done in many places. Plan a route through your neighbourhood, run around the park, jog along the boardwalk at the beach, or take to a track. Running and jogging are accessible, easy and free cardio activities. Before you begin, make sure that you're body is ready. Beginners should begin with [see also pre inked stamps ] speed walking, and then gradually work up to a jogging or running routine. Running is a very natural activity for your body and you can easily work it into your regular exercise routine.

3. Aerobic Dancing: In the 1970's there was an explosion in aerobic activity through the Jazzercise program. The 1980s brought exercise gurus like Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons into the spotlight, and even brought exercise attire like headbands and legwarmers to the fashion runways. In the 1990s, aerobics lessons were led by supermodels and sold everywhere on video. The new millennium brought cardio activities like pilates and yoga. Over the past thirty decades aerobics dance exercises may have changed, but the excitement has not faded. People still love to work out to a hot beat, and aerobic dance moves are fun and effective ways to keep weight off and maintain a trim, toned body.

Contrary to what many people believe, aerobic exercise is not limited to the uber-healthy. There are a variety of aerobic dance lesson styles to appeal to people of all fitness levels:

* Low-impact: In low-impact aerobics, the dancer always keeps one foot on the ground. There are no bouncing or jumping movements that can cause joint pain. Low-impact aerobic exercise is ideal for people just starting out, for older people, and for those who cannot or should not move or jump around excessively.

* High-impact: There is a great deal of jumping and complicated body movements in high-impact aerobics. For this reason, those with [see also pre inked stamps ] a little experience and a certain amount of agility and rhythm best perform these cardio activities.

* Water aerobics: Cardio exercises done in the water are known as water aerobics. These are low-impact activities that are usually performed in waist-deep water, so some swimming ability is required.

* Step aerobics: In step aerobics, a raised platform is used with [see also pre inked stamps ] a combination of body movements. "Stepping" movements are often used in both low and high-impact aerobics routines.

Cardio activities are good for maintaining a healthy weight, and essential in keeping a healthy heart. Consider making regular cardio exercise part of your daily routine.

Actos Lawsuits: First Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuit Set for Trial Next Month, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

The Firm continues to evaluate potential Actos lawsuits on behalf of patients who developed bladder cancer, allegedly due to long-term use of Actos.

New York, New York (PRWEB) December 19, 2012

The first Actos lawsuit alleging long-term use of the type 2 diabetes medication causes bladder cancer is scheduled to begin early next year in California, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. The case is one of many Actos bladder cancer lawsuits pending in JCCP 4696 - In re Actos Product Liability Cases, a consolidated proceeding now underway in Los Angeles Superior Court. Judge Kenneth R. Freeman, who is overseeing the California Actos litigation, has scheduled the trial?s start date for February 19th, 2013. (Jack Cooper, et al. v. Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc., et al., No. CGC-12-518535)

?We look forward to the commencement of trials in both the state and federal Actos litigations,? says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The firm is currently offering free lawsuit evaluations to individuals who were diagnosed with bladder cancer following long-term use of Actos.

Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuits

In addition to the California proceeding, hundreds of Actos lawsuits are currently pending in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana. The first trial in the federal litigation is scheduled to begin in November 2014, followed by the second trial in July 2015. (In re: Actos Product Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2299).

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered Takeda to add new warnings to the Actos label in June 2011, after a study found that long-term use of the drug increased the risk for bladder cancer.* Since then, further research has confirmed an association between Actos and an increased risk for the disease. In May 2012, research published in the British Medical Journal concluded that taking Actos for two years can double the risk of developing bladder cancer. ** A second study published in the Canadian Medical Association in July 2012 concluded that patients taking Actos face a 22 percent increased risk of developing bladder cancer. ***

While Actos is still available in the U.S., the drug has been pulled from the market in Germany and France due to its association with bladder cancer.****

Actos users who developed bladder cancer may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. Samsung's New Galaxy Grand Doesn't Quite Live Up to Its Name

Samsung's latest addition to its Galaxy line-up—the Grand—has just been announced. Sadly, it's not clear that it entirely lives up to its name. More »

NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor details leaked: 4-plus-1 cores, 28nm, six times the power of Tegra 3

NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor details lead 4plus1 quadcore, 28nm, six times the power of Tegra 3

NVIDIA's next superhero-themed mobile chipset has possibly made an early appearance in a leaked side in China, and it looks like it wants to go toe-to-toe with the latest processors from Samsung and Qualcomm. The Tegra 4 (codenamed Wayne) will apparently offer the same power-efficient 28nm process found on its Snapdragon rival and according to the slide from Chip Hell, there's a dizzying 72-core graphics setup. That's six times as many GPU cores as Tegra 3 -- the processor found in the Nexus 7, for example -- and the increase is claimed to result in six times the overall visual performance. Those graphics cores will be able to feed displays of up to 2,560 x 1600, with 1080p output at 120Hz, while the leak also mentions 4K -- if only in passing. There's no increase in CPU cores this time, with the same 4-plus-1 setup , but we are seeing its move to ARM's latest design, the Cortex-A15. Tegra 4 will apparently also catch up with USB 3.0, being NVIDIA's first mobile chip to do so, alongside dual-channel DDR3L memory. We've reached out to chipmaker and we'll let you know when we hear more, but it's highly likely we'll be welcoming this next-generation processor early next year -- say, at a certain mobile trade show.

Analysis: U.S. policy gridlock holding back economy? Maybe not

(Reuters) - Washington thinks a resolution of the tense debate over the national debt will unlock a burst of economic growth by lifting uncertainty that has stymied investment.

It is a widely held view on Wall Street as well, derived from the glaring signs of weak business confidence over the last year as America struggles to get its fiscal house in order.

However, evidence for this belief is far from clear and is an issue of considerable debate, and even some businesses wonder how big a factor uncertainty is.

In Lexington, Kentucky, new sales are slipping at Gray Construction, a family-owned builder of factories and distribution centers. Clients say they are holding back because America could fall into recession if Congress and the White House don't strike a deal soon to avoid a "fiscal cliff" of some $600 billion in tax increases and government spending cuts due to begin in January.

"They're saying: 'Let's wait. Let's see what happens,'" Chief Executive Stephen Gray said.

And yet, the company, which also does design and engineering work, still has a record backlog of work and has hired about 30 people in the last six months.

The company's CEO has seen little dips in the sales pipeline before and said it's hard to know how different business would be if Washington's politicians inspired more confidence. As it is, Gray sees no reason to stop hiring: "I'm not super-worried."

Like Gray, economists are also unsure how much they can attribute business decisions to something so indeterminate as uncertainty, and they are divided over the degree to which erratic policymaking has dragged on the economy in recent years, if it has at all.

Answering this question could give important clues on how the economy will perform next year, whether or not Congress strikes a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

HOLDING BACK

Toward that end, researchers at Stanford University and the University of Chicago have created an index to gauge just how murky the future looks.

They count soon-to-expire tax provisions and mentions of uncertainty in major newspapers, as well as how much economic forecasters disagree on things like future government spending.

In a sample period between 1985 and 2011, they found heightened uncertainty went hand in hand with weak economic growth and hiring. Their index hit an all-time high last year when congressional gridlock nearly led the United States to default on its debt. It remains high, with a host of temporary tax cuts due to expire at year's end and the debate over the fiscal cliff regularly splashed across front pages.

Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford economist who helped make the uncertainty index, says weak levels of investment, along with surveys in which businesses say they are holding back because of concerns over the direction of policy, suggest uncertainty has weighed on growth since late 2011.

This year, business investment on capital goods - things like equipment and machinery - has fallen short of what economists would expect considering the $1.7 trillion in cash that companies were holding in the third quarter.

New orders for non-defense capital goods other than aircraft fell 7 percent in the year through October, while total business investment in the third quarter dropped the most since 2009.

Bloom says businesses would spend their cash more readily if politicians united around a grand bargain to put U.S. fiscal policy on a stable path. Using past correlations between uncertainty and economic growth as a guide, he estimates that lifting uncertainty could add about 3 percent to gross domestic product over the next 18 months - enough growth to create roughly 2 million jobs.

"There should be a surge of investment and hiring," he said.

That would be a big boost to the lackluster 1.9 percent growth rate many economists expect next year.

A deal in Congress that avoids the fiscal cliff while taming the nation's $16 trillion debt over the long term may come by year-end or in early 2013. It is also plausible Washington will avoid the fiscal cliff but kick the can into 2013 when it comes to the details of longer-term deficit planning.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner, who has looked exasperated in public over the fiscal debate, has edged closer to President Barack Obama's key demands in the last few days, and the president made a counteroffer on Monday that could put a deal within reach. The two sides still differ on where to set tax rates and how to overhaul social spending programs.

The tense negotiations have corporate America on edge.

So far this month, companies have submitted 148 statements to the Securities and Exchange Commission expressing concern about the fiscal cliff. In November, there were 215 such warnings, up from 80 in October and none prior to May. About half of 200 big companies surveyed by American Express last month said Congress won't resolve the fiscal cliff this year.

Chemical maker DuPont is trimming its capital investment plans due to uncertainty. "We're not going to spend as much as we thought next year," DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman said last week in an interview.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told CNBC earlier this month that reaching a sensible fiscal deal would get rid of the biggest roadblock to stronger growth. Many business leaders and lawmakers agree.

NO SURE THING

However, some economists doubt uncertainty has played such a central role holding back the U.S. economy. If they are right, growth next year could disappoint even if politicians wow investors with a grand bargain.

Researchers at Goldman Sachs say the weak economy might be boosting measures of uncertainty as much as the other way around.

The bank doesn't rule out an "uncertainty shock" over the next few months - most economists think uncertainty must matter for something - but its researchers crunched numbers and found there might be a simpler explanation for the disappointing levels of business spending.

The bank's economists calculated how much the business sector would normally be investing given its assets and the stage of the business cycle, and found the recent shortfall could be mostly explained by a lack of available credit.

Rather than being too scared to invest, companies might simply be having trouble getting loans. That makes sense considering many banks are still licking their wounds from the recent financial crisis.

"The evidence that a policy uncertainty shock is already depressing activity is far from unequivocal," Goldman Sachs economists Jan Hatzius and Sven Jari Stehn wrote in a recent note.

Their research suggests some of the hype over uncertainty is overblown. Indeed, much of the country is not paying attention to the fiscal cliff debate.

A poll by Gallup conducted December 1-2 showed only 60 percent of Americans were following the talks at least somewhat closely. In the history of national events tracked by Gallup, that ranks somewhere between the Iraqi election of 2005 and the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito in 2006.

Households, whose spending drives more than two-thirds of the economy, are not as worried as the country's CEOs, although a recent consumer sentiment survey showed concerns appeared to grow in early December.

Some economists say the most important issue for Congress is not to resolve policy uncertainty but rather to strike a fiscal deal that doesn't hurt the economy by ushering in harsh budget austerity measures.

Surveys of small businesses show companies are worried about higher taxes, but over the last few months and years they have worried even more about poor sales. Adjusting for inflation, household incomes are still lower than they were before the recession. This has depressed spending, a situation that could be exacerbated by tighter fiscal policy.

"The biggest uncertainty is whether the U.S. consumer is really back," said Stephanie Kelton, an economist at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Combo-snacks of cheese and vegetables cut kids calories, study suggests

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Almost everyone is familiar with the alarming trend of childhood obesity. 32% of U.S. children are overweight or obese according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. One of the many factors leading to the obesity epidemic is increased snacking in children.

Today children eat around three snacks daily while thirty years ago they ate only one.

Parents want to ensure that their children snack healthfully, but restricting or limiting children's snacking can backfire. Children in homes where parents carefully regulate snacking were found to eat more unhealthy snacks in an unregulated environment than children with less restrictive parents.

Researchers Brian Wansink, Ph.D., Mitsuru Shimizu, Ph.D., and Adam Brumberg set out to discover whether certain types of snacks would lead children to feel full while consuming fewer calories. 201 students in the third through sixth grade were given either a plate of potato chips, a plate of vegetables, a plate of cheese, or a plate of vegetables and cheese while watching some of their favorite afterschool cartoons. They were asked about their fullness at the beginning of the experiment, after watching one episode of a cartoon, and again after watching a second episode of a cartoon.

Healthy Snacks for Kids

Children who ate the vegetable and cheese snack plate needed significantly fewer calories than the children who ate the plate of potato chips to achieve satiety. Further, children from low-involvement families (families which spent less time eating meals together or interacting with each other while eating) ate more potato chips than other children when given potato chips to snack on.

However, children from low-involvement families and overweight children showed the greatest reduction in the amount of calories consumed when eating the cheese and vegetable snack instead of potato chips. Overweight and obese children ate 76% fewer calories when they were given the cheese and vegetable snack while other children averaged a 60% reduction in calories eaten. Both groups reported being as full when eating the Cheese and veggie snack as they did when eating chips.

Use these results to help your child eat fewer calories when snacking, try:

? Having more nutritious snacks available instead of eliminating snacking

? Substituting a healthier snack like veggies and cheese in place of chips on a regular basis

? Offering smaller quantities of a variety of healthy snacks (multiple kinds of vegetables or fruit) on a plate. Variety tends to stimulate consumption; increasing the healthy options available can lead to more of them being selected and eaten.

? Encouraging children to be mindful of internal cues and stop eating when they feel full

Reports: Sen. John Kerry to be named Secretary of State

Now that Susan Rice has withdrawn her name, President Obama reportedly will name Senator John Kerry to take over as Secretary of State when Hillary Clinton resigns.

It looks likely that Sen. John Kerry will be nominated to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is expected to retire from the post as part of President Obama?s second term cabinet reshuffle.

Several news sources ? beginning with ABC News ? are reporting that Mr. Obama soon will name the Massachusetts senator and Foreign Relations Committee chairman to take over from Sec. Clinton.

The move is not a surprise, particularly following the withdrawal of United Nations ambassador Susan Rice from consideration for the post. Ambassador Rice has been the target of fierce opposition by Senate Republicans, led by Sen. John McCain, who vowed to block her confirmation.

RECOMMENDED:?5 ways events overseas could shape Obama's second term

Ms. Rice was criticized for her comments shortly after the September attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which included the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other US personnel, including two Navy SEALs.

President Obama had voiced strong support for Rice in his first post-election news conference last month ? pointedly taking on Sen. McCain and other Republicans who had accused Rice of twisting early details about the Benghazi attack for political purposes during the presidential campaign.

Rice?s defenders continue to insist that her comments during appearances on Sunday TV talk shows just a week after the attack were based on talking points provided by US intelligence agencies.

More recently, the White House ? including Obama ? has been less vocal in support of Rice, which some of her more ardent supporters have complained about.

It seemed increasingly clear that the administration was reluctant to expend any more political capital on what likely would be a messy confirmation fight, perhaps leading to defeat at a time when other issues ? avoiding the ?fiscal cliff,? in particular ? were seen as more important.

Unlike Rice, Kerry likely would have no trouble winning the approval of his fellow senators.

GoogleTrends Says Real Estate Investing is Declining?

Doesn't mean anything to me. You will find much of that search volume to be people that are looking at wholesaling or flipping and have little to no cash to start.

The serious buyers that I work with are heavy into the market right now. Debt is cheap and there are plenty of deals to be had on quality assets if you just look. I am speaking to the commercial real estate sector (triple net and multifamily) exclusively.

Business is as good as it has ever been.

Auction of Greta Garbo's dresses, caps fetches $1.6 million

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A two-day sale of clothing, jewelry and other memorabilia belonging to reclusive movie star Greta Garbo fetched $1.6 million, more than three times the original estimate, according to Julien's Auctions.

Garbo's Louis Vuitton streamer trunk, which sold for $37,500, was among the top sellers in the auction of 800 items which began on Friday, along with three leather driving caps she wore in a 1924 car advertisement that fetched $15,000.

A U.S. passport issued to her in 1964, which carried an estimate of $3,000-$5,000, also sold for $15,000, and a 1930s black velvet evening dress that had an estimated value of $1,200 went to the highest bidder for $13,750.

"Greta Garbo commanded Marilyn Monroe prices," Martin Nolan, the executive director of the Beverly Hills auction house, said in a statement. "Her beauty, extraordinary screen presence and fashion trending style were proven to be timeless."

Garbo, one of Hollywood's greatest stars and beauties, died in New York in 1990 at the age of 84. She retired from film and public life decades earlier in 1941.

All of the items in the sale, including a platform bed she designed with antique Swedish carvings, photos, luggage and documents, had been kept in storage before her family decided to sell them in the auction that was announced in August.

Garbo started her Hollywood career in silent movies such as 1927's "Flesh and the Devil" and was among the few actors to successfully transition to talkies, becoming iconic not only for her beauty, but for her brains and the streak of independence she displayed on film and in her personal life.

The Swedish actress earned four Academy Award nominations, her first for 1929's "Anna Christie," and was finally given an honorary award for unforgettable performances by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1954.

Eat Vegetables And Fruits For An Extended, More healthy Daily life ...

Are you aware that diet and dietary inadequacies would be the major reason for most health problems? The very best 3 main reasons for dying within this country ? cardiovascular disease, cancer and stroke ? are mainly avoidable with diet and diet alone! Let us discuss vitamins. Vitamins are crucial for growth, protection and also the regulating energy in the human body. They ought to be provided by diet. An insufficiency inside a particular vitamin can ultimately increase the risk for expression of signs and symptoms. Vitamins perform specific roles in the human body and could be further split into two groups, body fat-soluble and water-soluble. The body fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E and K. Body fat-soluble vit a was the very first vitamin recognized. Your body more readily soaks up this group when consumed with body fat or oils. These vitamins are saved in your body and do not need to always be consumed daily. Water-soluble group includes the Vitamin b, which encompass the whole B complex including B2, B2, B3, B6, B12, folate, pantothenic acidity and biotin in addition to ascorbic acid.

As very important because it is that you should consume appropriate meals, this may also be necessary that you should likewise invest in taking some type of vitamin supplementation. The meals that people eat today doesn?t have exactly the same mineral and vitamin content it did years back. There?s a stable and rapid depletion from the soil where crops are grown creating lack of minerals and vitamins. Like a matter fact to obtain the equivalent iron which was in a single cup of green spinach in 1945 you would need to eat 65 cups today! Also many crops cannot even absorb minerals in the soil because of chemical manure. One other issue today may be the genetic modification of meals. Genetically changed meals could have genes using their company plants or creatures they might even contain chemicals for example pesticide sprays.

There?s a business which has isolated the gene in seafood that safeguards them from cold and it has integrated that gene right into a tomato. A lot of you understand the remembered taco shells in the past simply because they were contaminated using the genetically changed corn named ?Starlink? that was modified to create its very own pesticide sprays. Over 70% from the corn crop continues to be genetically designed. This corn is lacking of b12 along with other compounds. Obviously supplementation ought to be incorporated inside your daily diets, but from the natural source.
