Loved ones salute New Zealand dad killed by shark

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? About 150 friends and family of Adam Strange wrote messages to him in the sand and stepped into the water Thursday at a New Zealand beach to say goodbye a day after he was killed by a large shark while training for an endurance swim.

Strange, 46, was an award-winning television and short film director and the father of a 2-year-old girl. He was swimming near popular Muriwai Beach on Wednesday when he was attacked by the shark that was possibly 14 feet (4 meters) long. Surf lifesavers say they are convinced it was a great white shark.

Police attempting to save him raced out in inflatable boats and fired gunshots at the enormous predator, which they say rolled away and disappeared. They couldn't confirm if they'd killed it. Police were able to recover Strange's body.

Muriwai will remained closed for swimming until Saturday after the fatal attack, one of only about a dozen in New Zealand in the past 180 years.

Friend Adam Stevens said the Thursday beach service was run by indigenous Maori who removed the "tapu" or spiritual restriction at the beach. He said it was a "perfect tribute" to a man who spent much of his time swimming and surfing.

"He was a very robust, big, barrel-chested surfer," Stevens said. "He was basically completely obsessed with the ocean, with paddle boards and body surfing, everything. His garage was like a museum of surf craft."

According to Police Inspector Shawn Rutene, Strange was about 200 meters (650 feet) from the shore when he was attacked by a shark that police estimated was up to four meters (14 feet) long.

Stevens said his friend was planning to swim about 1 ? kilometers (one mile) Wednesday as he tested new goggles and trained for an annual endurance swim from Auckland to Rangitoto Island. The 4.5 kilometer (2.8 mile) swim takes place on Sunday.

"I surfed with him the day before," Stevens said. "He wasn't that pleased with his fitness level but was just getting into the right headspace and finding the motivation to get out there."

Pio Mose, who was fishing at the beach Wednesday, told the New Zealand Herald newspaper he saw Strange struggle against the huge shark. Mose yelled at Strange to swim to the rocks, but it was too late.

"All of a sudden there was blood everywhere," Mose said. "I was shaking, scared, panicked."

About 200 people had been enjoying the beach during the Southern Hemisphere summer at the time of the attack.

Stevens said he's been comforting Strange's wife Meg and their daughter since the accident. He said the girl is too young to understand what has happened but is aware of the emotions.

On his website, Strange says: "When I get a spare 5 minutes, I like to make a fruit smoothy, surf some big waves out on the West Coast, point my skis down a mountain with Meg, haul my mountain bike up and down a few hills, drink some pinot while scratching away at a film script ... If I get a spare 5 minutes ..."

Stevens said his friend, whom he's known about 15 years, was very creative and always positive.

"He lived in the moment brilliantly. It was completely infectious," Stevens said. "He feasted on the details."

Stevens said he and Strange worked alongside each other for a number of years at a film production company, Silverscreen.

On his site, Strange said he studied as a graphic designer and art director before getting into directing. He said he'd worked on commercials all over the world and had been a finalist for a number of advertising awards.

Strange won a Crystal Bear award at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival for a short film called "Aphrodite's Farm," a magical tale set on a dairy farm in the 1930s.

Tim Jago, chairman of the Muriwai Lifeguard Service, said a number of beaches near Muriwai reopened Thursday and that Muriwai would open for beach visits Friday and then swimming on Saturday. He said the closure at this point is to give surf lifesavers a break and he doesn't fear a repeat attack.

"We are quite comfortable the beast is dead," he said. "Footage from a helicopter indicates that when the shark rolled over and rolled off, it also sank to bottom."

Jago said witnesses spotted one or two other large sharks circling at the time of the attack, but that no sharks have been seen in the area since then.

Police did not say what species of shark was involved in the attack. Clinton Duffy, a shark expert with the Department of Conservation, said New Zealand is a hotspot for great white sharks, and other potentially lethal species also inhabit the waters.

Attacks are rare. Duffy estimated that only 12 to 14 people have been killed by sharks in New Zealand since record keeping began in the 1830s.

"There are much lower levels of shark attacks here than in Australia," he said. "It's possibly a function of how many people are in the water" in New Zealand's cooler climate.

He said that during the Southern Hemisphere summer, sharks often come in closer to shore to feed and to give birth, although that doesn't necessarily equate to a greater risk of attack.

"Ninety-nine percent of the time they ignore people," he said. "Sometimes, people get bitten."

Around the world, sharks attacked humans 80 times last year, and seven people were killed, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. The death toll was lower than it was in 2011 but higher than the average of 4.4 from 2001 to 2010.

Chuck Hagel and Hamas' Fake Friends

Why was Chuck Hagel skewered for taking money from an apparently nonexistent group?

This week, the dangers of the D.C. rumor mill were laid bare when New York Daily News reporter Dan Friedman posited that he was the unwitting source of a talking point used to bash Obama's embattled nominee to take over as secretary of defense.

Two weeks ago, Breitbart.com reported that Hagel had allegedly taken money from a group called "Friends of Hamas"-a tidbit that played into largely-GOP-voiced concerns over Hagel's opinions and record on Israel. The conservative news site attributed its reporting to unnamed Senate sources.

There's just one problem: Friends of Hamas doesn't seem to exist.

After Slate's Dave Weigel reported on the "Friends of Hamas" rumor last week, Friedman wrote that he unwittingly started it by inventing "Friends of Hamas" as a joke with a Senate source:

On Feb. 6, I called a Republican aide on Capitol Hill with a question: Did Hagel's Senate critics know of controversial groups that he had addressed?

Hagel was in hot water for alleged hostility to Israel. So, I asked my source, had Hagel given a speech to, say, the "Junior League of Hezbollah, in France"? And: What about "Friends of Hamas"?

The names were so over-the-top, so linked to terrorism in the Middle East, that it was clear I was talking hypothetically and hyperbolically. No one could take seriously the idea that organizations with those names existed - let alone that a former senator would speak to them.

Breitbart.com has responded, claiming Friedman's source was not its source. The Senate aide who told Breitbart about "Friends of Hamas" now says that "I have received this information from three separate sources, none of whom was Friedman," according to the site.

3 automotive parts suppliers charged with selling counterfeit replacement parts

NEW YORK ? Following a joint investigation by the FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, three individuals were charged today with selling counterfeit auto replacement parts.

Shashi Malhotra, 67, of Norwood, N.J., Fadi Kilani, 28, of Englewood, N.J., and Richard Dininni, 57, of Easton, Pa., were arrested at their homes.

New automobiles sold to consumers are equipped with parts that are manufactured or provided by the automobile's manufacturer - the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). When a consumer needs to replace a part, he or she can purchase either parts made by OEMs which are sold under the OEMs' brand names, or generic parts made by other manufacturers that are commonly referred to as "aftermarket" parts. Generic parts are regularly bought and sold lawfully as aftermarket parts, typically at lower prices than OEM parts. Many types of aftermarket parts - including those sold and falsely packaged as OEM parts by Malhotra, Kilani and Dininni - do not have to meet independent federal safety standards.

The investigation revealed from October 2011 through February 2013, Malhotra, who operated Worldwide Auto Parts and S&S International products and Manufacturing in Paterson, N.J., and Kilani, who operated Cypros Trading and Shipping in Paterson, conspired to sell counterfeit OEM parts. The defendants and their co-conspirators deceptively packaged aftermarket automotive parts - including brakes, brake pads, brake shoes, ignition coils, water pumps, window regulators, suspension sway bar links, wheel hubs, anti-lock braking sensors, control arm bushings, transmission filters, pitman arms, tie rod ends and suspension air springs - to falsely make it appear as though these parts had been manufactured by OEMs such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Federal Mogul.

They sold these parts to individuals and entities that they understood would re-sell to the general public and automotive repair shops, including repair shops that service New York City's taxis and limousines, which are subject to separate and regularly scheduled safety testing by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. Malhotra obtained some of these counterfeit parts from China and Kilani exported some of the counterfeit parts to Saudi Arabia.

Dininni, from November 2011 through June 2012, operated Professional Parts USA in Easton, conspired to sell counterfeit OEM parts. Along with his co-conspirators, Dininni also deceptively packaged certain aftermarket automotive parts, including brake pads and water pumps to falsely make it appear as though these parts had been manufactured by OEMs. Dininni and his co-conspirators then sold these parts to individuals and entities that they understood would re-sell them to the general public and to certain automotive repair shops.

Malhotra, Kilani and Dininni each face a maximum of 15 years in prison on the charges of trafficking in counterfeit goods and conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit goods.

Several original equipment manufacturers have established numbers which individuals may call with questions. You may call Ford Motor Company at 313-337-3663, Federal Mogul at 877-489-6659 and Chrysler at 855-818-7612.

Iranian leader: Iran not seeking nuclear weapons

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's Supreme Leader said Saturday that his country is not seeking nuclear weapons, but that no world power could stop Tehran's access to an atomic bomb if it intended to build one.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters, told a group of Iranians at his home in the capital, Tehran, that his country backs the elimination of nuclear weapons.

"We believe that nuclear weapons must be eliminated. We don't want to build atomic weapons. But if we didn't believe so and intended to possess nuclear weapons, no power could stop us," Khamenei said in comments posted on his website, khamenei.ir.

Iran recently has highlighted a religious decree Khamenei issued more than seven years ago that bans nuclear weapons in an effort to back up its claim that Tehran's nuclear program is being used for peaceful purposes and medical research. Iran authorities often cite the decree to counter Western suspicions that Iran could ultimately move toward an atomic bomb.

Although Iran views Khamenei's 2005 fatwa as a binding declaration, the West and its allies have repeatedly accused Iran of using any tactic to prolong the standoff over its nuclear program, and possibly advance its nuclear capabilities.

Iran denies such aspirations, insisting it is enriching only to make reactor fuel and to make isotopes for medical purposes.

Tehran, however, has left U.N. nuclear inspectors empty-handed when it comes to addressing Western suspicions that it's conducting tests related to nuclear weapons. Three rounds of talks last year made no headway on the West's main demand: That Iran halt its highest-level uranium enrichment.

Washington and others worry that this level of nuclear fuel, at 20 percent enrichment, could be turned into warhead-grade material much faster than the 3.5 percent enriched uranium needed for Iran's lone energy-producing reactor. Moreover, the U.S. has expressed concern that Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency had not agreed to let inspectors visit a military site, known as Parchin, where the U.N. agency suspects Iran might have carried out nuclear weapon trigger tests.

Moreover, Iran recently said it had begun installing a new generation of centrifuges at its main uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, a move that will allow it to vastly increase its pace of uranium enrichment in defiance of U.N. calls to halt such activities.

Iran is living under stepped-up Western sanctions that include a total oil embargo and banking restrictions that make it increasingly difficult for Iran's Asian customers to pay for oil deliveries. Tehran insists the sanctions won't force it to give up its nuclear program.

Good Reads: Women in crime, democracy's era, digital mapping, a history in heels

This week's good reads include an interview with a photographer who documented female prisoners in Mexico, debunking theories about which nations are 'ready' for democracy, how smart phones disorient their users, and the surprising history of high heels.

War is ambiguous. Sometimes it?s easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys. But more often, players fall somewhere in between, both committing crimes and being deeply affected by them. The drug war in Mexico is no different, no matter if the participants are men ? or women.

Julie Turkewitz in The Atlantic Monthly interviews Katie Orlinsky about her project photographing female prisoners in Ciudad Ju?rez, Mexico, bringing a fresh eye to the conflict there.

Turns out, writes Ms. Turkewitz ?women ? not just men ? were serving as its weary warriors, ferrying contraband and kidnapping kingpins. Between 2007 and 2011, the number of women incarcerated for federal crimes rose 400 percent.?

It was a figure that Ms. Orlinsky wanted to understand. Were these women ? mothers, sisters, teachers, and widows ? victims or perpetrators? The answer, of course, both provides insight into the drug war and highlights how complex of an issue it is.

? ?I am not ashamed. There are worse things,? says Lorena, who is in prison for drug trafficking. ?My husband is dead and I did it for my children.? ?

Democracy in demand

Contrary to popular thought, the world is ready for democracy. Arguments that poor, non-Western countries are in some way not ?ready? for democracy have been upended, writes Larry Diamond in The Wilson Quarterly.

Two mainstream theories on democracy have directed the discussion for decades: One postulated that countries had to grow rich under authoritarian rule before they would be able to sustain democracy. The other insisted that some countries were poor ?because the West had trapped them in a structural condition of economic dependence and servitude (a modern form of imperialism),? writes Mr. Diamond.

But something funny happened in the 1980s and ?90s: A number of poor countries went ahead and adopted forms of democratic government, and for well over a decade, many of them have had some success. Consider Taiwan and South Korea: ?Once they achieved democracy, South Korea and Taiwan continued to record brisk economic growth,? writes Diamond.

Although countries and regions vary widely, and many do not trust politicians, polls say people prefer democracy to authoritarianism. ?This is strikingly the case now in the Arab world, where the Arab Barometer surveys show that upward of 80 percent of the citizens of most countries name democracy as the best form of government, even if they do not define democracy in fully liberal and secular terms.?

It?s not a perfect road, of course, because systems of corruption easily undermine democratic progress. But the best way to democracy may be just to trudge through it.

Remember when driving to someplace new meant consulting a foldout map before you left the house? Those days are more or less gone with the advent of GPS, smart phones, and digital mapping.

Mapping the indoors could be the next frontier. Just think: You?re in Home Depot or Ikea and with a touch to your smart phone you can orient yourself, find what you are looking for, avoid congested aisles, and compare prices. But does this convenience mean we will stop thinking for ourselves?

Kat Austen in The New Scientist warns of the perils of overdependency on digital mapping. ?Apple recently misplaced an Australian town on its iPhone map, a mistake which led to the map?s users becoming lost in the outback and having to be rescued by police.?

And if your battery runs out, there?s no app for that.

Men in heels

High heels were designed for men, not women. That?s right. Another surprising news flash: They weren?t designed for walking.

?The high heel was worn for centuries throughout the near east as a form of riding footwear? for men, Elizabeth Semmelhack of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto tells William Kremer for the BBC.

Persia, with the largest cavalry in the world, was the epitome of masculinity. The shah wanted to ally with rulers in Western Europe to defeat the Ottoman Empire so he sent diplomats to Russia, Germany, and Spain. The exotic warriors wore ornate outfits and heeled boots, which helped them stay on their horse while shooting arrows.

When all things Persia (modern-day Iran) became the rage in 16th-century Europe, ?Persian style shoes were enthusiastically adopted by aristocrats, who sought to give their appearance a virile, masculine edge that, it suddenly seemed, only heeled shoes could supply,? writes Mr. Kremer.

It didn?t matter that they were completely impractical for the muddy, rutted streets of Europe. And in the following century European women adopted the trend. Men?s fashion, meanwhile, took a turn toward the more practical, dropping them completely by 1740 as ?foolish.? Some 50 years later women followed, leaving the world more or less sans heel until the mid-19th century when female fashion tottered over the sidewalk once more.

Jason Momoa Tested for Guardians of the Galaxy

Jason Momoa Topless Game of Thrones

Bullet to the Head wasn?t the success or epic action film that Sylvester Stallone hoped it could be, but it was a great vehicle for supporting actor Jason Momoa to get some positive buzz back in his corner after starring as?Conan the Barbarian.

Momoa had a limited but impressive role in HBO?s?Game of Thrones and now he?s joining one of the world?s biggest film franchises, as one of the core members of Marvel Studios? upcoming?Guardians of the Galaxy.

Latino-Review ? who?ve been leading the charge in dropping Guardians news bits before Marvel even confirmed the film ? has the scoop on the major casting news, and according to their trusted (and proven) sources, Jason Momoa will play Drax the Destroyer.

According to the report, Momoa won Marvel?s attention with an impressive screen test and they immediately offered him the part. He?s currently in negotiations to join the James Gunn written and directed film.

Drax is the second character to be cast, with Chris Pratt signing up as the film?s lead Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord last week. Unsubstantiated rumors previously listed Isaiah Mustafa (center in the below image), Brian Patrick Wade (left) and Dave Bautista (right) as being up for the role.

Isaiah Mustafa Brian Patrick Wade Dave Bautista

With his physically focused roles in?Stargate Atlantis, Conan the Barbarian and?Game of Thrones, Momoa is no stranger to showing off his upper body?muscles?and wielding bladed weapons, and that?s exactly what?Guardians of the Galaxy needs. Take a look at the official?Guardians concept art version of Drax to see ? looks like Momoa will make due without the long hair for this role:

Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy Movie

Like Pratt, Momoa is another great pick-up for the franchise, as someone who has many years ahead of him in the business, is on the edge of becoming a star in Hollywood, and can easily become a fan-favorite ? especially as the ruthless Drax whose one objective in life, after dying as a human and being?re-purposed?as a weapon, is to hunt down and destroy Thanos.

James Gunn has very clear and specific ideas for each of the characters according to?executive producer Victoria Alonso, and next, needs to cast voice actors for Rocket Raccoon and Groot, while choosing a female lead for Gamora. Other characters they may be casting for include Nova, Quasar, and potentially many other beings from Marvel?s cosmic universe. Pre-production and special effects/animation work has already begun and principal photography begins this June in London.

More shortly? Let me know on Twitter if you approve of this casting @rob_keyes.

Iron Man 3?releases May 3, 2013,?Thor: The Dark World?on November 8, 2013,?Captain America: The Winter Soldier?on April 4, 2014,?Guardians of the Galaxy?on?August 1, 2014,?The Avengers 2?on May 1, 2015,?Ant-Man?on November 6, 2015, and?Doctor Strange?sometime after that.

Japan Is Bringing Robots To The Classroom To Learn

Robot Walking with WomanRobot Walking with Woman

We expect to see robots in a number of places in our world. We expect to see them on the floors of factories, in outer space and perhaps even vacuuming our floors on days we just don't feel like getting out a mop. But do you expect to see one in your child's fifth grade class? Well, if your child goes to Higashihikari elementary school you will need to get used to the idea. A robot named Robovie will be making a test run at the school. Researchers at the International Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute are bringing Robovie to the school in order to teach him better verbal skills.

Currently the robot speaks about as well as a five year old, but the researchers are hedging their bets that the bot will learn a lot of new words by listening to the kids at the school talking with each other and with it. In time the researchers hope that the robot will be able to learn about human manners and customs, making it easier to integrate itself into the daily life of the humans around it.

HTC One leaks in press shot again, this time in black

When HTC CEO Peter Chou showed off his company's next flagship phone, the M7 / HTC One a few weeks ago, he had both black and silver versions in hand. Shortly after, known press pic source evleaks snagged a promo image in silver and now has posted another to Unwired View, this time of the black one. Still sporting a unique two button design seen previously and what we assume is a Sense 5.0 homescreen widget, this pic also flashes New York localized info, as compared to the earlier leak's London home. For now, we're left counting down until its expected unveiling on the 19th in... New York and London -- see you there.

Hawaiian Airlines adds Sendai to Japan destinations

Staff Pacific Business News

Hawaiian Airlines said Thursday that it will add a fifth destination in Japan this summer with the launch of flights to Sendai in late June.

Honolulu-based Hawaiian said the new service, which starts June 25, will fly from Honolulu International Airport to Sendai three times a week, pending approval from Japan's government.

The new flights will be the first between Sendai Airport and Hawaii since another carrier stopped flights in 2004, and is among the first new services to be introduced at the airport since the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku region shut down operations for more than a month, Hawaiian, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: HA), said in a statement.

?We are delighted to be bringing the aloha of our island home to a region being rebuilt after massive devastation two years ago,? Hawaiian President and CEO Mark Dunkerley said in a statement. ?Hawaii is a place for relaxation, healing and rejuvenation, and we look forward to making visitors from Tohoku feel as though they are in Hawaii from the moment they board our flights.?

The new flights will connect with Hawaiian's flights to Sapporo, flying nonstop from Honolulu to Sendai, with one-stop service on the return flight via Sapporo, the airline said.

Hawaiian plans to operate the Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, which seat up to 264 passengers, on the new route.

When I started blogging I used to measure my success in page views. As I watched my daily readers creep up from 100, to 200, and so on, I thought that I was on the road to blogging success. However, the problem was that I?d been overlooking some very important numbers.

For starters, I didn?t have many subscribers. And even if I had a lot of page views, the bounce rate was over 80%. Even if people were stopping by my blog, they weren?t sticking around or sharing my posts. In fact, I had precious few inbound links from authoritative blogs. If I wanted to grow my blog and my online business, I had to revolutionize my approach to converting one time readers into loyal readers and fans.screaming fans

Here are five ways I turned my readers into fans:

Create a Blog Series

The traffic on my blog didn?t really start to grow until I started posting regularly in order to attract more readers and to capture more search engine traffic. The more I posted?at least five days per week?the more I increased my impact with readers. While plenty of bloggers struggle to think of a topic, a series made it easier to create momentum for my writing and kept readers coming back.

Caroline Johnson shares at Daily SEO Tip, ?Nothing attracts people more than curiosity. Take some story or topic and write a succession of posts about it, with every one being only a part of the whole and suggesting that something really interesting awaits the readers in the next one and, finally, in the last post of the cycle.?

Use Social Proof to Validate a Blog

When I started bringing in more readers, I realized that I needed to do a better job of presenting myself and my authority to speak to my topic. I began by creating an about page with several endorsements from industry leaders. I also added social media sharing buttons that displayed the number of times my posts had been shared.

Pamela Vaughan of HubSpot suggests considering five different kinds of social proof for a blog:

1. Expert Social Proof

2. Celebrity Social Proof

3. User Social Proof

4. Wisdom of the Crowds Social Proof

5. Wisdom of Your Friends Social Proof:

I didn?t incorporate all of these on my own site, but as I integrated more social media sharing buttons, I saw my page views and subscriptions steadily increase each week.

Don?t Be Shy About a Call to Action

Once I figured out how to both attract more readers and keep them around with effective social proof indicators such as endorsements, subscriber counts, and social media counts, the next step was to convince them to either subscribe to my blog or my e-newsletter.

I?ll get into the e-newsletter subscribers a bit more in the next point, but when it comes to attracting more subscribers through RSS or email, the most important thing is to ask readers to subscribe in a location where they were most likely to look. It really can be that simple!

Pamela also suggests creating a call to action for both specific landing pages and for the bottom of a blog post. She writes, ?Once you?ve designed some CTAs for your landing page, be more ?in your face? about converting your blog visitors into subscribers by placing these subscription CTAs directly within each of your blog articles. Don?t worry ? they don?t have to replace your articles? lead-gen CTAs; just insert your blog subscription CTA directly below the one you?re using for lead generation.?

Delight Readers with a Problem-Solving Give Away

It was not enough to just offer readers a free download in order to entice them to sign up for my e-newsletter. Free does not lead to more conversions or higher engagement with readers. I?ve tried it and I?ve seen my friends try it, and I assure you, it doesn?t work for building a direct marketing e-mail subscriber list.

I had to delight my readers with a giveaway that was so surprising and useful, they couldn?t resist subscribing to my email newsletter list in order to get it. Dave Navarro writes for ProBlogger, ?Giving away a product-quality resource is an incredible list-building tool because it takes people by surprise ? they?re not used to getting something truly substantial for free. And workbooks are particularly powerful because they contain the promise of some fairly immediate results ? when the reader gets through it, they?ll either have a particular problem solved or they?ll have more information around a topic that?s important to them.?

In order to create an attractive eBook to give away, I studied which posts attracted the more comments, shares, and page views. I then wrote an eBook related to some of those posts that specifically addressed a problem commonly faced by these readers.

Highlight Services Above the Fold

When readers stopped by my blog, I wanted to highlight my blog content that I?d labored over. However, those readers of my blog didn?t know anything else about my business or the products I wanted them to buy?or I lost sales to shopping cart abandonment. I?d failed to use my blog to highlight my core business!

Kristi Hines takes a look at CopyBlogger, one of the leading blogs for both writing advice and lead conversion tips. She notes that ?Before the content, there is a section that draws attention to Copyblogger?s WordPress solutions for design, hosting, SEO, and conversions.?

When I added a navigation bar link highlighting my business and a sidebar ad with a listing of my services, I began to see a steady uptick in emails from readers who dropped by for a blog post but stayed to hire me.

Building a blog takes a lot of time, but converting readers into fans isn?t too hard to do. If you plan ahead for your posts, use some social tools, prompt your readers to take action, and highlight your best work, you?ll be able to increase your reader engagement like I did.

Video: 'Get off my lawn:' Song sparrows escalate territorial threats

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Territorial song sparrows use increasingly threatening signals to ward off trespassing rivals. First an early warning that matches the intruder's song, then wing waving ? a bird's version of "flipping the bird" ? as the dispute heats up, and finally, if all other signals have failed, attack.

This hierarchical warning scheme, discovered by researchers at the University of Washington, adds nuance to a communication system that has been long-used as a model to study how people use and learn language

"This is one of the most complicated communication systems outside of human language," said lead author ?a?lar Ak?ay, who did the study as a UW graduate student. He is now a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University.

"Here we find that if a sparrow matches the intruder's song as the intruder invades his territory, this almost always predicts that he will eventually attack the intruder," Ak?ay said.

The study, published online this month in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, is the first evidence that song-matching is used as an early warning signal. Previous studies had hinted, but had not clearly established, that song-matching is a threat signal.

"We succeeded here because we recognized that song-matching is an early warning signal," said co-author Michael Beecher, a UW professor of psychology. "We designed our experiment to simulate an escalating intrusion by another song sparrow, so that our subject would begin with low-level threat signals before switching to higher-level threat signals."

A male song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) will defend his territory against any male song sparrow that intrudes. He has a repertoire of eight to 10 songs that he uses to attract mates, post his territory, communicate with neighbors, and, as in the newest study, threaten an intruder.

The researchers recorded songs from 48 sparrows living in Discovery Park in Seattle. To feign an intruder, they perched a stuffed song sparrow in a bush or tree and played the recorded song.

The song was first played just outside of the sparrow's territory. Believing the song to come from a hidden aggressor close to their home turf, the provoked bird sang and approached the speaker.

The song was then played from a different speaker placed 20 meters (60 feet) inside his boundary, which simulated movement by the rival into the territory. At the same time, the researchers uncovered the stuffed sparrow just above the speaker, with its beak posed as if it was singing.

It was enough to fool the live birds. Many of the sparrows responded first by matching the intruder's song. When the simulated intruder moved into the territory and persisted in singing, the defending sparrow progressed to higher-level warnings including soft songs and wing waves.

Soft song is not lullaby-like, but is perceived as menacing by enemies. Wing waving, a vigorous vibrating of one wing at a time, likewise looks harmless enough, but it too is an assertive signal.

When the stuffed bird did not react to those higher-level warning signals, the live bird attacked.

"Birds generally do all this signaling," Ak?ay said, "because it's usually beneficial to avoid getting into a fight if it can be avoided. There are less costly ways to persuade an aggressor to back down."

Most of the sparrows in the study, 31out of 48, eventually attacked. Birds who had song-matched were the mostly likely to attack.

Not all birds showed the same pattern of signaling. A few "bluffers" matched the trespasser's song without following through with an attack. Some others ? labeled "under-signalers" by the researchers ? attacked without giving warning signals.

The researchers are studying these behavioral subtypes now, and have collected evidence that these birds, like humans, have personalities that shape their behavior in distinctive ways.

"These kinds of field studies provide context for laboratory research that uses bird song learning as an animal model for exploring the brain mechanisms of learning," Beecher said. "Using bird song as a model system without understanding its natural social context would be like studying the neural basis of language without any idea of what humans use their language for."

Internet Marketing Tips That Will Expand Your Business | Turn $1 ...

If you?re personally honest with your Internet marketing, you want to work hard to make money. You can certainly enjoy the wonderful freedom of self-employment and even the passion about your niche, but at the end of the day, all you really care about is boosting your income. Use this advice to maximize your earnings.

To be successful in business, it?s very important to have an accurate mailing list that includes an many of your customers as possible. Have a place on your site where people can sign up for your email service. This data can be used later to market your business, or for quality control purposes.

If a customer has a complaint handle it yourself. You should strive to handle all customer complaints yourself as this way you know when they have been resolved. Give personalized service to your customers. If they email you a complaint, answer it yourself, and say you will resolve the problem.

Stay up-to-date with what the Internet is up to. Keeping yourself updated on new innovations and trendy sites on the Internet will give you marketing inspiration for getting the word out about your own product and services.

Get involved with social networks, and reach out to users who fit your target market. Make sure to be careful about sending unwanted spam to people because MySpace has been cracking down, and they have been taking people to court for online harassment.

Most mobile phone companies allow you associate a specific business number with your phone. Getting a number isn?t difficult, so make the time to do it.

Try giving people another reason to visit your site other than for your business. This should increase the traffic to your site as people are able to communicate with one another. This also keeps your website front and center in peoples? minds. Provide your site?s visitors with graphics that they can post up on their own personal websites. This is great, free advertising for you.

Keep statistics that are highly-detailed. Track and measure everything you can think of, from your sales and refunds to your site visitors, referrals and conversions. Watching your stats helps you to make Internet marketing choices, as you will have a good idea of what is working and what is not.

When you offer your customers the chance to sign up with your Ezine, you are building a relationship with these customers, and participating in a very effective marketing technique. Add personality through photos of yourself, family, and staff. Try adding short humorous inputs about home life and employee relationships. Create attention-grabbing subject lines for your Ezine that will draw your readers in and make them want to learn more.

You can build a client list by using a squeeze page. A squeeze page will encourage your visitors to share their contact information with you. In exchange for contact information, you can offer a free promotional item. You will get another person on your email and they will get a nice freebie.

Offer free gifts to your customers when they buy something; this will let them know that their business is appreciated. Making customers feel good is often underrated among strategies for Internet marketing, so although including free gifts with orders may seem expensive, in the long run having repeat business and loyal customers will pay off.

You have to increase your subscribers to increase your profit. A split test can help you determine which methods earn you more subscribers. A split test is when you show one version of your site to one group of people, and another version of your site to other people. Make your decision based on which version resulted in attracting the most subscribers.

A great way to land new customers is by having a ?Dollar Sale? for first time customers. You create a great buzz and promote strong traffic, and it boosts your product?s exposure. You can also realize additional profits as customers add other items to their carts. Increasing the traffic to your website will lead to an increase in sales.

Encourage your customers to refer business to you by offering them special incentives. One sale can easily be turned into many by the referral process when you give your customers good incentives. People love free gifts, and this can increase sales!

Advertise with popular websites. While there will be some cost involved, it will get you noticed. Ensure that the page you use has considerable traffic.

Give people a reason to come back to your site: you could for instance advertise new limited offers every week. Building customer loyalty and interest is helped by showing customers that you appreciate them. Your customers will spread the news about your business through word of mouth if you build a reputation for being loyal and generous.

If your website looks and works well it will give you a better online experience. Routinely audit and test the links, pictures, and online payment systems to identify any bugs or issues that will create difficulties for your customers. Just like people won?t shop if they are unable to get in the front door, Internet shoppers will not wait while you keep fixing website bugs.

Internet marketing campaigns should encourage growth of this strategy. This may seem crazy, but it is essential to have customers find you, buy from you, and then come back to your site.

Look into doing your own marketing online, there are many resources available and you can save a great deal of money not using high-priced consultants. There are forums, blogs, local courses, and even free e-books dealing with this subject.

Internet marketing is a great field because you always have something new to learn about it. If you take advantage of the information you?ve just received, you can easily become a more effective marketer. You?ll find it?s definitely possible to do what you love and also be amply compensated for the hard work you?re doing.

Analysis: S&P closes in on record, but stocks may still be cheap

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In March 2009, it was easy to say stocks were cheap - the S&P 500, after all, had lost half its value. Fast-forward almost four years, and U.S. stocks have recovered almost all of those losses, and now sit just a stone's throw from a new record.

It might be tempting to suggest it is time for a pullback. Yet, for many investment strategists, the combination of a gradually improved economy, Federal Reserve stimulus, and relatively inexpensive valuations has them predicting further gains - and even talking about the chances of a new bull market.

"The national conversation for four years has been, 'Are you being conservative enough in this high risk world?'" said Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer at Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis.

"I think as we go to new highs that is going to change to 'Are you being too conservative in what may be a new bull market?'"

It's likely that before long the S&P 500 <.spx><.inx> will surpass its 1,576.09 record, reached October 11, 2007. On Tuesday, it closed at 1,519.43. The Dow is even closer, only about 1 percent away from its all-time record of 14,164.53.

Still, the value of stocks against earnings expectations shows the market is cheaper than in 2007. In addition, the economy appears to be improving rather than peaking, and earnings are much less reliant on what was then a heavily leveraged financial sector.

In addition, the Federal Reserve's massive bond-buying programs, designed to keep interest rates low, has boosted the market's value. That raises concerns about what will happen when the Fed says it is ready to begin tightening policy - but that could be some time away as the central bank is targeting a jobless rate of 6.5 percent against 7.9 percent in January.

And, in any case, if the Fed did stop its easy money policies it would be a sign that economic growth was climbing.

There is also a wall of money argument in the stock market's favor.

The strong surge in prices at the outset of the year, which has driven the Dow up 7 percent, has sucked more money into equity mutual funds in a five-week period than at any time since April 2000, according to Thomson Reuters' Lipper unit. That has been partly fueled by concerns that bond prices - after climbing in recent years - could retreat. Given low interest rates, investors are also struggling to find attractive yields for bank deposits or in money market funds.

To be sure, that has raised some concerns that there's excessive bullishness in the market, but that alone isn't enough of a reason to derail a rally that is also being fueled by signs of increased deal making.

Mergers and acquisitions in the Americas picked up sharply in the fourth quarter, with about $427 billion in announced deals, compared with about $272 billion in the year-ago period, according to Thomson Reuters data. So far this year, the pace has kept up with deals such as the proposed $24.4 billion buyout of computer maker Dell Inc by Michael Dell and his partner, Silver Lake.

STOCKS FOR SALE

The initial public offerings and secondary offerings markets have also been strong, with 76 companies selling shares in the United States to raise a total of $18.2 billion, the best start of a year since 2008.

One of the basic variables investors use to define a stock's value is its forward price-to-earnings ratio, the amount of cash an investor has to pay for every dollar of earnings the company is expected to earn in the next year.

Current data show both forward and trailing price-to-earnings ratios for U.S. companies are lower now than they were in October 2007 by about 11 percent to 13 percent.

"The quality and the sustainability of the earnings stream is much higher today and also you're paying less for it because multiples are lower," said Paul Zemsky, head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management in New York.

"Much less earnings are coming from finance companies and fewer are coming from leveraged-type companies now," he said.

The financial sector accounted for more than a fifth of the S&P 500 in October 2007 according to Standard & Poor's data, thanks to record-breaking profits from companies like Lehman Brothers that ceased to exist during the financial crisis.

Financials now make up 15.7 percent of the index. Something similar happened to technology during the dotcom boom and bust. At the height of the 2000 tech bubble, the sector accounted for 34.5 percent of the S&P - it now accounts for 19.2 percent, still the largest sector.

In October 2007, five of the 10 sectors were above the 10 percent mark and now seven of the 10 make up more than 10 percent each. This more balanced distribution suggests no one sector is overwhelming the average, and that earnings do not depend on bubble-like results from one industry.

MIXED ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

The economy has rebounded even though the jobless rate remains elevated. The last three months of payroll figures have seen an average of 200,000 in job gains. In addition, industrial output has hit highs last seen in mid-2008 - just before the financial crisis hit.

"If industrial output and the employment numbers continue to improve, this could catch investors by surprise, and spur a new wave of equity investment," said Brad Lipsig, senior portfolio manager at UBS Financial Services Inc in New York.

The sluggish recovery has kept the Federal Reserve in crisis mode. Some see the Fed, not market fundamentals, as the strongest pillar behind the four-year rally. They worry the market will react harshly when the Fed starts to remove its accommodative stimulus - which could come as early as next year.

Stocks have done well, in part, because the Fed has underwritten the market's risk, and made stocks look attractive by forcing interest rates lower. If rates rise quickly due to some kind of inflationary shock, it will not help equities.

But even if the market surpasses the 1,576 all-time high, it wouldn't effectively be equal to that 2007 peak. When adjusting for inflation, the benchmark would have to scale 1,700 to truly reach new highs. But strategists see a relatively clear path to more gains as retail investors continue to shed their caution.

"The emotional journey from panic to jubilance may take much longer than four years," said Lipsig.

Joey Logano prepared for first start in Penske Ford at Daytona Unlimited

A new era in the career of 22-year-old Joey Logano will begin this weekend at Daytona International Speedway, as Logano will make his debut with the defending Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Championship team, Penske Racing.

Not only is it the first race of the 2013 season, it will also be the first time Logano has driven a Ford in NASCAR competition (he raced Fords in ASA/Pro Cup).

The event also marks the first race with his new crew chief Todd Gordon, behind the wheel of a car numbered 22 and the first time working with his new spotter, Tab Boyd.

Despite starting just his fifth full season of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition, Logano is already a Sprint Unlimited veteran. He?s run in the season-opening exhibition race every year since coming into the series as a rookie in 2009. Logano?s best finish was a seventh-place result back in 2010.

In a unique twist of fate, Logano will be the lone representative from Penske Racing in this year?s Sprint Unlimited. Despite winning the championship, teammate Brad Keselowski didn?t earn a pole in 2012, meaning Logano, who won poles at Pocono and Homestead, will fly solo Saturday in Penske Racing?s debut with Ford.

Daytona has always been one of Logano?s better tracks over the course of his NASCAR career. He has earned two top-five and three top-10 finishes in eight NSCS races at the track.

He also has one victory (July 2011) and four top-five and five top-10 finishes in eight-career NASCAR Nationwide Series races at Daytona.

How was your off-season? ?Like everyone else, you spend the off-season trying to get away from everything, but all you end up doing is thinking about racing. At least that is all I end up thinking about.

I got a chance to go to Kuwait and Germany to visit our troops as part of a USO Tour, but pretty much the rest of the time I was thinking about or working on this coming season.

I?ve learned you never stop. If you want to be great, you never stop. And coming over to Penske Racing, there were a lot of things for me to do. I just want to get going. All of us just want to get going. So this weekend couldn?t have gotten here any faster.? ? Joey Logano

What do you think of the new format for the sprint unlimited? In 2013 the sprint unlimited will feature fan voted elements, including segment length, pit stops and the chance to eliminate cars. ?I think it?s a great idea to get the fans more involved.

They are the reason we are here. They buy the tickets to watch us race. They support our sponsors and that is why the sponsors want to be involved in the sport.

They are the most important people to us and for our sport. So it is an interesting way to do things. I just hope they look at the options and pick what will be the best show.

They will want to pick probably what sounds the coolest in their mind, but they need to make sure the show will be the best from a racing standpoint.

But in the end, we will race with what they decide. We just have to live with it and make the best choices that we can from what we are given.? ? Joey Logano

Everyone asks drivers about their goals, what are yours for 2013? ?Your goal coming into every season should be to win every race and win the Championship.

But you know that winning every race isn?t realistic. There are too many talented drivers and race teams out there.

So in the end, I just want to go out there and be competitive, run up front and have a shot to win races on a regular basis. If you win some races, getting into the Chase and running for the championship will take care of itself. In reality, that is what we all want ? a championship.? ? Joey Logano

Chicago, Illinois (CNN) ??Hadiya Pendleton, 15, was laid to rest on Saturday following a funeral in which her family struggled to keep national politics from overshadowing her memory.

The funeral was attended by numerous political figures, including Michelle Obama. Pendleton was shot just one mile from the Obamas' Chicago home, and an online petition urged the president to visit his hometown to address the gun violence. Late last week, the White House announced that not only would the first lady attend the funeral but that President Obama would visit Chicago this week to talk about gun violence there.

Cleopatra Cowley, Pendleton?s mother, is scheduled to attend the president?s State of the Union address, in which he is expected to bring up gun control. Other family members of shootings victims, from mass shootings such as Newtown, Tucson, Aurora and Virginia Tech, are also expected to attend.

During the Saturday funeral, Cowley spoke only briefly, and gave a glimpse into her grief:

[:56] ?You don?t know how hard this really is. And those of you who do know how hard this is? I?m sorry. I?m sorry. No mother, no father should ever have to experience this.?
