Chinese Suspects Questioned for Attack on Japanese Ambassador?s Car

Chinese authorities have identified several individuals who they believe were involved in the recent attack on the Japanese ambassador?s car:

Beijing security authorities have been questioning the suspects, including the man who snatched the Japanese national flag from the ambassador?s car and damaged the flagpole it was on.

The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has not arrested the suspects, an embassy official said.

A final decision on punishment of the suspects and the manner in which it will be announced will likely be made after careful consideration at the Communist Party leadership level. The Chinese government will likely gauge public opinion in both Japan and China before making a decision.

A harsh punishment is unlikely. Those involved will probably be required to pay a simple fine. Since they were in a luxury automobile, they can probably afford to pay it.
