It was the first proper day of the Olympics in London today, so we decided to get a free taste of the action.? After watching the men?s cyclists set off from The Mall in the road race, we headed to Hyde Park, where BT is hosting the free London Live festival every day during the Olympic Games.
The BT London Live event in Hyde Park is one of five official big screen sites set up across London for members of the public to watch the Games for free.? We had a great day, soaking up the atmosphere and taking in the family-friendly attractions on offer.? Here?s our round up of what there is to see and do, and some practical info.

Attractions
Big screens
The main attractions are the five large screens dotted around the festival area.? Each screen shows footage of a different event, changing throughout the day, so you can follow your favourite athletes or cheer on your team?s best medal hopes.
Live music?
Away from the main screen/stage area, there is a small live music stage where performers entertain the crowds all day long (my son had a good boogie along to a couple of bands).? Pull up a giant beanbag, or find a spot on a bench, and enjoy the relaxed ambience.
Have a go sports
Try your hand at a range of sports from volleyball, tennis and badminton to wheelchair basketball.
Get creative
Take your children to the Creation Station tent to create their own Olympic flag, paint their own Olympic pose (overalls provided!) and make a glittering medal to take home.
Cadbury?s Joyville
Go along to the Cadbury?s tent to taste some chocolate, have a go at the mini Olympics and win a (chocolate) gold medal.

Practical information ?
Admission
Admission to the Hyde Park event is free until the site reaches capacity.? As far as we could find out, the site isn?t likely to reach capacity before the afternoon.? Once you are in, there is no re-admission.? Opening hours at Hyde Park are here.? Entry to the live site area is via gates at Speakers? Corner.
Food and drink
Visitors are not permitted to bring food and drink into the festival area.? You can take baby food, though, and empty 500ml plastic bottles to fill up with drinking water once inside.
There are lots of food and drink stalls on site.? Alongside the stalls belonging to the Olympic sponsors (think chocolate and fizzy drinks), there are the usual vendors you expect to see at music festivals, together with several bars (everything from real ale to champagne) and a coffee stall.
There is a picnic area near Screen 5, with lots of seating and some shady areas.? The baby changing tent is close to this area.
Essentials
The wet weather earlier in the summer turned the grass in this part of Hyde Park into a mudbath, a problem remedied by covering the whole area in woodchips.? As a result, the park is dusty and there isn?t anywhere for babies to crawl around.? It?s a good idea to take a waterproof-backed picnic blanket to put down (or a plastic sheet and a blanket) so you can sit and watch the big screen.? Other essential items are sun cream (must be less than 200ml) and a hat, as there?s not a lot of shade ? particularly if you are watching one of the big screens. ?For details of what you are allowed to bring click here.
